Summit started fast, taking the opening kickoff they moved to a 1st down at Mendham's 25 yard line. On 2nd and 7 Summit coughed up the ball, ending the threat. Mendham took advantage of the momentum shift and drove 73 yards in 12 plays to score. After an exchange of punts Summit got another opportunity when they recovered a Mendham fumble on the Mendham 37 yard line. However, nothing came of it and Mendham got the ball back. Mendham was forced to punt and Summit got the ball back on their 21 yard line. Summit moved the ball to a 1st down at the Mendham 18 yard line with ample time still on the clock. The drive was highlighted by a 10 yard pass from Scott O'Sullivan to James Johnson (both had big days, more about that later), an 18 yard pass to Sam Rose and a 21 yarder to David Roduit. Unfortunately, the TD pass into the corner of the end zone was intercepted.
Mendham again played off the momentum of shift of the turnover and moved 80 yards in 3 plays to end the half with a 14-0 lead.
The second half was all Summit. On Summit's 2nd possession of the half a drive started at Summit's 32. Will Gruetzmacher broke many tackles to gain 40 yards to the Mendham's 28. After a Summit penalty, O'Sullivan hit Sam Rose for 11 yards to the 23. On the next play Johnson made a terrific catch in traffic to score. The PAT attempt was blocked, but Summit was on the board. Summit got its next chance late in the 4th quarter. Summit started on their 23. Two passes to Johnson got the ball to Mendham's 40. Runs by Gruetzmacher, Kevin Feeney and O'Sullivan picked up a 1st down at the 21. A pass to Roduit got Summit to the 5. O'sulivan sneaked to the 1 and Feeney took it in for the score. Summit tried a 2 point conversion with 1:24 left, but it failed.
Summit still had 3 time outs left and they used them skillfully and got the ball back at their 14 with 56 seconds left in the game. An O'sullivan pass to Feeney got a 1st down at the 28. A 15 yard pass to Johnson moved it to Summit's 43 and the clock stopped when he got out of bounds. A 12 yard pass to Johnson put the ball on the Mendham 43 with 18.6 seconds left, completed passes to Gruetzmacher, Rose and Roduit used only 14.6 seconds and put the ball on the Mendham 25. With 4.0 seconds left Summit tried a 42 yard field goal that would have won the game.
Johnson caught 11 O'Sullivan passes for 141 yards. That sent fans looking in the record book where they found that the old record was 10 paases in a game, Shared by John Brown and Jamie Allen. O'Sullivan had a big day, completing 21 of 31 attempts for 280 yards.
