Summit's opening game certainly delivered more than the normal share of heroics and excitement. Unfortunately, Summit came up one pass short. Early in the 4th quarter Morris Hills scored to open a 21-13 lead. After an exchange of possessions, Summit got the ball back on its 32 yard line, following a Morris Hills fumble. At that point only 5 minutes were left on the clock and it was now or never for Summit.

Runs by Scott O'Sullivan and JP Facchinei gave Summit a 1st down on the 43. A pitch out to Will Gruetzmacher yielded another 1st down at Morris Hills' 46 yard line. After three incomplete passes Summit was faced with a 4th and 10 situation. O'Sullivan found Gruetzmacher who delivered a reprieve in the form of a 1st down on the Morris Hills 33 yard line. Facchinei moved the ball to the 30 and Gruetzmacher scampered to another 1st down at the 21. O'Sullivan, on a QB keeper, got Summit to the 12 yard line and Facchinei bulled his way to the 11 yard line and another 1st down. Now the clock showed 58 seconds.

A one yard gain and 2 incomplete passes made it 4th and 9 from the 10 yard line. The 4th down pass was incomplete, but the Morris Hills defender was called for interference, granting Summit another reprieve and a 1st down at the 5 yard line. A pass gained only one yard and the clock was down to 33 seconds. Kevin Feeney, on only his 2nd carry of the game, found a seam in the defense and scored to pull Summit to within 2 points (21-19). On the 2-point attempt a receiver came open but the pass fell just short, ending an exciting final drive.

On the opening possession of the game Morris Hills ripped Summit's defense as they moved 50 yards in 6 plays and had a 1st down at Summit's 13 yard line. However, Morris Hills coughed up the ball on a fumble, the 1st of 3 fumbles that would help Summit cope with Morris Hills' very effective rushing game that averaged almost 7 yards per carry. Summit took advantage of the break and drove to the Morris Hills 2 yard line. The big play of the drive was a pass from Edgar Ozols to James Johnson that covered 36 yards and ended on the 2 yard line. We promptly lost the ball via a fumble. Luckily, Morris Hills almost immediately return the favor and Summit had the ball again at the Morris Hills 22 yard line. This time Summit scored, with the final 12 yards covered by a TD pass from Ozols to Facchinei. The extra point was blocked which eventually led to the need for a two point conversion attempt at the end of the game.

Morris Hills took a 7-6 lead when they drove 71 yards, all on the ground, in nine plays. Summit scored late in the first half after Gruetzmacher intercepted a Morris Hills pass and returned it to their 25 yard line. Seven plays later O'Sullivan scored from 1 yard out to give Summit a 13-7 halftime lead.

Morris Hills scored early in the 3rd quarter via a 9 rush drive that covered 60 yards. Morris Hiils seemed to put the game away in the 4th quarter when they went 61 yards in 4 plays. That set up the final Summit heroics that fell short.
