Playing a tough and quick team like Weequahic is always rough and tough. Playing them on the small court at Carver Middle School just compounds the problem. Summit started out great and finished the 1st quarter ahead 13-11 as Travis Marchell led with 7 points. The 2nd quarter turned out to be a disaster. Everything Keon Lawerence threw at the hoop went in and Weequahic completely dominated their offensive backboard. Often they managed 3 or 4 attempts until finally getting a score. The half ended with Summit down 44-25.
Summit came out in the 2nd half and regained their composure. They held Weequahic to 5 points in the 3rd quarter, while Summit scored 10, led by Chris Kehoe's 8 points. Summit played well in the 4th quarter but the gap was just too big.
Except for the 2nd quarter Summit outscored Weequahic 40-35. It always seems to be tough getting a call at Weequahic and Summit got to the foul line for only 3 shots while Weequahic had 21 attempts. Travis Marchell and James Johnson leach scored 16 points and Kehoe added 11. Josh Sussman had 8 rebounds.
Summit now needs to beat West Essex (away) and Dover (home) next week to qualify for the State Tournament.
