In their first meeting Summit held a 2 point lead over Chatham entering the 4th quarter, only to lose in the final seconds. Through 3 quarters this was a repeat of the first game, so the tension was high. Chris Kehoe got the 4th quarter off to a good start with a three. However, Chatham's #42 answered with a field goal. James Johnson scored and #42 answered again. Josh Sussman scored and #42 answered. Sussman scored and was fouled for a 3 point play and #42 scored again. Finally Summit got back to back FGs from Johnson and Tim Donnally before #42 drained a 3 pointer to make the score 47-41 with 4 minutes remaining. Taylor Simpson scored a FG , but Chatham came right back with a trey to close the gap to 5 points with 1:20 to go. But that was a close as Chatham would get as Travis Marchell sank 4 straight free throws to put the game into the win column.
Marchell had gotten Summit off to a great start as he scored Summit's first 8 points to go up 8-2. But Summit's shooting fell cold and managed to sink 4 of 24 shots through the rest of the half and found themselves down 21-20 at the half. With great defense and balanced scoring Summit outscored Chatham 12-9 in the third quarter to go up 32-30 and set the stage for a 21 point Summit 4th.
Summit enjoyed very balanced scoring with 4 of the starters registering double digits, Marchell (14 pts), Johnson (13 pts), Sussman (10 pts) and Kehoe (10 pts). It was notable that Summit sank 9 of 10 free throws as their free throw shooting has improved markedly from the beginning of the season. Summit was out rebounded most of the game, but Tim Donnally contested every rebound and led Summit with eight.
Special Note: At half times at home games fans can pay $1 to try to sink a shot from mid-court. If they do they win a Summit tee shirt. We should keep an eye 7th grader Luke Shehata. He was 1 for 1 last week and went 3 for 5 tonight. It was rumored that others were providing the dollar in the hope that he could win them a tee shirt.
