Fans who went on vacation during February break instead of coming to the Mendham game made a huge mistake. They missed the most exciting game of the year. Mendham had crushed Summit by 18 points in their first meeting at Summit. So the fans were wondering what might await Summit at Mendham. Summit trailed most of the game, but hung in close. With 5.6 seconds left in the game Summit was within 2 points at 52-50 and was inbounding the ball. The Ball got to James Johnson. He tried to dribble penetrate but was stymied by a double team. He dished the ball to Chris Kehoe who was also closely guarded. With only 1 second left Kehoe had to shoot. He leaned around the defender and fired up a shot from behind the 3 point line. The buzzer went off just after the ball left Kehoe's hand. The shot ripped nothing but net for 3 points and the game. There was bedlam on the court and in the stands. A great night and certainly Summit's biggest victory of the season. Johnson had clearly been scouted well. Mendham double teamed him almost every time he made a move and Johnson was held to only 2 points through the first 3 quarters. Luckily, Kehoe was on fire and scored 17 of his game high 23 in those first 3 quarters. Taylor Simpson and Travis Marchell each added 6 points over the 1st 24 minutes. Summit began the final quarter down 2 at 35-33.
In the 4th quarter Johnson picked up the load and scored 10 points to help keep Summit in the running. The score was tied at 38, 44, 48, and 50 before Mendham made it 52-50 with 40 seconds left. A couple of back and forth turnovers set up the final dramatics.
Kehoe's 23 points broke his personal high of 19 set in the previous game at Parsippany. Johnson had the most rebounds with 7.
