In the final seconds Summit kept their State Tournament hopes alive when James Johnson hit a jump shot with 1.2 seconds on the clock. It ended a seesaw battle that saw a 10 point Summit lead in the 1st half disappear in a barrage of West Essex 3 point goals. West Essex left the floor at half time with a 31-30 lead after being down 30-20.
The game opened with Chris Kehoe draining a pair of 3 pointers and Josh Sussman adding 8 1st quarter points. Sussman and Johnson led Summit to the 30-20 lead in the 2nd quarter before WE found the range on 3 pointers.
Sussman provided most of the scoring in the 3rd quarter (8 points) as Summit regained the lead 45-44. In the 4th quarter the lead changed hands 4 times with the biggest lead being 1 point before Summit took a 2 point lead at 55-53. West Essex immediately answered with 2 FGs to retake a 57-55 lead with 1:38 remaining. Free throws by Taylor Simpson and Travis Marchell knotted the score at 57 with but 38 seconds left and West Essex in possession of the ball. West Essex turned the ball over and Summit called a time out with 11 seconds to go. Summit got the ball to Johnson who drove the lane, pulled up and drained a jumper to win the game.
Johnson led the scoring with 22 points and Sussman had his strongest game of the season, scoring 21 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.
Thanks go to Shanta Torres for filling in to tally the rebound stats.
