Despite a valiant comeback effort in the fourth quarter, the Summit Varsity Lady Hilltoppers lost to arch rival Chatham 49-58 in Summit. A disastrous 2nd quarter when Summit was outscored 19-4 was the key reason for the loss, when Summit’s defense broke down and allowed too many open shots and too many fast breaks. The rest of the game, however, showed how far Summits program has come, as the Lady Hilltoppers took everything Chatham had and then some as they mounted an impressive comeback. The balanced scoring of Danielle Scott, who scored two baskets in each quarter to finish with a game high 16 points, kept Summit in the game as she was unstoppable once she got the ball underneath the basket. She also collected 7 rebounds. Summit got a great boost in the fourth quarter from Danielle’s sister, Melissa Scott, who led the comeback with 6 points and 4 assists in the quarter while directing the offense. Many of her assists were to Renee Freeden, who had 8 points in the game, and 4 rebounds. Summit’s swarming, pressing, trapping defense rattled Chatham, who had numerous turnovers in the fourth quarter, many caused by Jamie Osmulski and Katelyn Allocco. Jenna Wilson and Megan Osmulski each had key baskets in the comeback, which was thwarted in the end by the huge advantage Chatham had on the foul line, where they converted on 17 free throws to Summit’s 6.

JV Result

Won 33-32 In the most exciting game to date this year, the Summit JV Hilltoppers held on for a 1 point victory at home against an experienced Chatham squad. With an already depleted squad with the absence of Sophomore Deanna Nelson and the injured Colleen Laughlin who was limited due to back spasms, the JV showed a lot of heart in fighting a well coached Chatham squad. Summit stayed with Chatham in the first half due to the scoring of Candy Marchell and the gutsy play of Danielle Allocco, who did all the scoring in the first half, which resulted in Summit trailing 12-13. Both teams came out more aggressive in the third quarter, and some nice scoring from Melissa Scott and Alex Reid helped fuel a precarious 21-19 lead at the end of the third quarter. This set up a classic duel with Summit’s swarming, switching man to man defense against Chatham’s fronting man to man zone press. Early in the quarter freshman Shannon Murphy drew her 5th foul, further depleting Summit underneath. Some nice work by Abby Mell kept Chatham off the boards, and two buckets by Marchell and one by Reid helped Summit open up a 4 point lead with under two minutes to go. But pressure from Chatham resulted in some uncharacteristic turnovers for the JV and before you knew it the game was tied. A clutch free throw by Danielle Allocco gave Summit a 1 point lead with less than 20 seconds left, but Chatham had two chances to score in the final 5 seconds. After a miss, with one second remaining Chatham appeared to have an uncontested lay up for the win but out of nowhere Marchell swooped in to swat the attempt away and Summit held on barely for a great win for the program. Marchell carried Summit to victory, finishing with 16 points, 12 rebounds, and 5 blocks in her strongest performance of the year. Allocco’s 10 points and steady ball handling were also key to the victory.
