The Summit Lady Hilltoppers traveled to Mendham where they met up against a well drilled Mendham team and lost 74-38. Summit came out with a lot of energy and some nice baskets by Danielle Scott and Renee Freeden kept Summit close at the end of the quarter, trailing 8-12. But like other numerous games this season, the second quarter was Summit’s undoing, as Mendham out rebounded Summit badly and got numerous easy fast break lay ups to take a 28-12 halftime lead. Numerous times Summit girls tried to take an offensive foul as Mendham drove to the basket, only to be whistled for a block, and foul trouble began to affect their play. By the middle of the third quarter Mendham had a huge lead, so Coach inserted some new players to get a spark. A nice bucket by Lauren Magness and a strong driving lay up by Alex Reid got the Hilltoppers going, and when Jamie Osmulski hit a beautiful 3 pointer some in the crowd wondered if Summit could come back. But Mendham kept their varsity in till the waning moments of the game, overshadowing some nice work by Nicki Nelson, Alethia Martinez, Dana Kwitnicki, Jenna Wilson, Melissa Scott and Jess Tauber at the end of the game.

JV Game

Won 43-30 In a terrific performance, the JV Lady Hilltoppers ran their record to an unbeaten 9-0 coming into next week’s game against a tough Hanover Park squad. The JV dominated the first quarter playing flawless basketball, and raced to a 10-0 lead before a Mendham time out. The backcourt of Jenna Wilson with 3 in the period, Alex Reid with 5 and Danielle Allocco with 4 took over the scoring burden of the inside players and also caused numerous turnovers en route to a commanding 13-2 first quarter lead. The game was close from then on, but every thrust by Mendham to chip away at the lead was turned back by Summit. The balance of the JV was demonstrated with the scoring of Colleen Laughlin, Candy Marchell, and Melissa Scott, which helped to open the lead back up to twelve, 25-13, at half. Mendham came out in the third quarter trying to run and fast break, but the Hilltoppers got a great quarter from Marchell, with 3 buckets, to keep Mendham at bay. The fourth quarter was a clinic put on by the JV. First, some great inside scoring from Shannon Murphy, who swished two turnaround jumpers, and a lay up by Abby Mell, got the JV going. Then great defensive work by Deanna Nelson and Marchell, with 2 blocks, kept Mendham off the boards. Finally, the backcourt of Wilson, Reid and Allocco held the ball away from Mendham and ran the last 1:30 of clock out. Games highs were recorded by Marchell with 10 points, Murphy with 7 rebounds, Reid with 5 steals, and Marchell with 2 blocks. The turnaround of the JV from last year is remarkable, as the last time they faced Mendham a year ago they lost 53-6.
