In a game of incredible ebbs and flows, the Summit Lady Hilltoppers again displayed their never give up attitude as they came from way back to defeat Parsippany in overtime, 60-55. A very even first quarter, ending 11-11, was dominated by Danielle Scott, who had 6 points and 6 rebounds, part of an amazing game performance. Getting a great all around quarter from Jamie Osmulski helped establish Summit to a 26-21 halftime lead, and all in the crowd expected the Lady Hilltoppers to build on that in the third. But it was not to be. A combination of some good work by Parsippany who adjusted to Summit’s zone at halftime, and an 0-14 shooting streak put Summit in an 11 point hole by the first minute of the fourth quarter, 41-30.

Things looked bleak until Coach made some key substitutions and Summit’s press started to take effect. Some great leadership came from Megan Osmulski, who asserted herself in the fourth quarter, and when she hit an amazing 3 pointer the fans started to believe Summit could come back. Some nice put backs by Danielle Scott narrowed the gap to 4 points, and then some amazing free throw shooting the rest of the quarter from Osmulski, who hit all 5 of her free throws, and Scott, who hit all 6 of hers, including the game tying shots, sent the game into overtime at 50-50.

But Parsippany hit their first shot in overtime and when Danielle Scott fouled out with a lot of time left in OT, things again looked bleak. Coach inserted Danielle’s sister, Melissa, and the freshman responded with an amazing OT session. Handling the ball flawlessly, driving into the teeth of the Parsippany defense to draw fouls, Melissa Scott showed great poise and character as she hit on 5 straight foul shots in OT to stake Summit to a four point lead. A great three by Parsippany closed the game to 56-55, but a bucket by Renee Freeden, who finished with 8, opened the lead again. At the seventeen second mark, a huge play occurred when Megan Osmulski sacrificed her body and drew an offensive foul as a Parsippany player was charging down the lane. In the frantic last seconds, two clutch free throws by freshman Jenna Wilson sealed the victory for Summit. Despite finishing the game on the bench, Danielle Scott scored 25 points and had 17 rebounds in a superior all around game.

JV Game

Won 52-28 In another of those games where it looked like it would be close, the Summit JV lady Hilltoppers asserted their will on a talented team and drew away for a resounding 52-28 victory in Parsippany. In a terrific first quarter, Summit ran to a 16-14 lead on some great inside work by Shannon Murphy and Candy Marchell and some outside scoring by Colleen Laughlin. Defensively this was not what the JV is accustomed to, and some nice work by Alex Reid and Deanna Nelson helped to slow Parsippany down, who was held to just 2 points in the second quarter. Unfortunately, the JV was held to only 4, as they shot 2-14 in the quarter. Needing a spark, the JV got one from Jenna Wilson, who had 5 in the quarter, and Melissa Scott, who also had 5, as they widened their lead to 36-22 at the end of the third. The fourth quarter showed the JV at their best, as they ran the floor, caused numerous turnovers and rebounded ferociously. Abby Mell had a terrific all around game, with 9 rebounds and 4 points, and Danielle Allocco, who registered 6 points and 4 steals, had a solid overall game. The story of this game was rebounding, with Marchell clearing 16 boards, Murphy with 11 and Mell with 9. Parsippany was relegated to only one shot at the basket, and the JV continually got offensive rebounds and put backs. Murphy led the team with 12 points.
