In an as exciting a 4th quarter as you can imagine, the Summit Varsity Lady Hilltoppers pulled out a dramatic 49-48 win at Weequahic. The game was played at a hectic pace as both Summit and Weequahic pressed all over the floor, and Summit raced to a 13-9 lead at the quarter as Danielle Scott led the scoring. The second quarter saw Weequahic turn on the jets and they scored a number of points off transition and forged a 24-23 lead at half. Summit stayed in the game only due to the great outside shooting by Renee Freeden who finished with 15 points. The second half was a mixture of Summit’s tough backcourt defense led by Alethia Martinez, Katelyn Allocco, and Jenna Wilson, and Weequahic’s board crashing front court resulting in lots of inside scoring. Summit pulled ahead with 4 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, only to have Weequahic score 9 points in the next minute and a half to take a three point lead. But two clutch free throws by Melissa Scott, the team’s most reliable free throw shooter so far this year, closed the gap to one. Some great defense by Nicky Nelson helped Summit cause a turnover, and with time running down Summit found a wide open Megan Osmulski, who despite being fouled, converted a great shot from inside to take a one point lead with 7 seconds remaining. Although she missed the free throw, Osmulski snared her own rebound and helped run out the clock to preserve a hard fought one point victory.

JV Result

Won 42-23 The JV Lady Hilltoppers scored a surprisingly easy win over a talented but erratic Weequahic squad 42-23 in Newark. The game started out on a fast pace and Summitgrabbed to an early 11-7 first quarter lead with some nice hoops by Colleen Laughlin and Danielle Allocco. Summit came out in the second quarter playing better defense and created numerous steals by Allocco and Jenna Wilson resulting in baskets by Deanna Nelson and Alex Reid which led to a 21-12 lead at half. The third quarter was Summits best this season as they completely shut down Weequahic and held them scoreless, and some great offensive boards and put backs by Shannon Murphy extended the lead to 32-12. The fourth quarter saw Summit’s lead shrink slightly with some nice fast breaks by Weequahic, only to be rebuffed by the great interior work of Abby Mell and Candy Marchell, who finished with 8 points. Reid led all scorers with 11 points, and Murphy and Nelson led Summit in rebounds.
