The Varsity Lady Hilltoppers traveled to West Essex and for the first 16 minutes continued their good play of the recent past, taking a 21-18 lead at halftime. Megan Osmulski was the catalyst for the first half, hitting for 7 in the first half including a beautiful three pointer. Renee Freeden and Melissa Scott added to the lead in the second quarter, and some nice defensive work by Nicki Nelson, Katelyn Allocco and Jenna Wilson seemed to give the team the momentum to carry them into the second half. But West Essex adjusted to the Hilltoppers and put in a trapping zone as soon as the ball crossed half court, and their defense really stepped up the pressure. All of a sudden passes that found their mark in the first half were being thrown away and there seemed to be a lid on the basket, as Summit shot only 3 for 24 in the second half. In addition, foul trouble plagued two of Summit’s starters, Danielle Scott and Jamie Osmulski, all game and their playing time was severely limited. Summit only had two free throws in the second half, as it seemed like most calls were going the other way. By the time the buzzer sounded Summit found itself on the wrong end of a 24-6 second half run that led to this tough loss. Summit looks to rebound Thursday for a must win game away at Dover with an invitation to the state tourney hanging in the balance.

JV Game

Won 40-19 The start of the JV game against West Essex was very strange, as Summit’s usually high powered offense had a tough time scoring. And halfway through the first quarter an injury to a West Essex player found their coach on the cell phone stopping the game for 5 minutes (the player was later seen on the bench of the Varsity so it is assumed she is fine). That down time helped Coach Welsh settle his players, and as in past games the JV clamped down on defense. This caused numerous turnovers, as Alex Reid, with 9 steals, Danielle Allocco with 3 steals and Candy Marchell with 3 steals each converted breakaway opportunities that led to a sound 21-5 lead at halftime. Some nice outside shooting was again demonstrated by Colleen Laughlin, who had two buckets in the second quarter off great feeds from Deanna Nelson, who finished with a team high 5 assists for the game. The third quarter saw West Essex throw everything at the JV, especially on the boards, but some great rebounding by Abby Mell, who finished with 7 tough boards, kept West Essex from seriously damaging the lead. The fourth quarter saw the JV play like they usually do, with Shannon Murphy getting offensive rebounds and converting the put back. And there was new energy for the team provided by Dana Kwitnicki, who did a nice job bringing the ball up and getting rebounds, and the whole bench erupted when she hit her first two points for the JV on a nice jumper from the side.
