The Summit-Dover game was moved from Dover to Summit because of field conditions. Unfortunately, being the home team didn't help Summit. Dover took a 2 run lead in the 2nd inning on back-to-back doubles and a single. They lenghtened the lead in the 3rd. Three consecutive singles and a sacrifice fly produced 2 runs with 2 outs. The next batter struck out for what would have ended the inning. However, the ball eluded the catcher and the runner was safe and a run scored. Another single drove in the 4th run of the inning. At this point Matt Carbone came in in relief and got the final out.
A solo homerun gave Dover a 7-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth. Summit got on the scoreboard in the 4th when Sam Rose was hit by a pitch, Fred Westphalen got his second of 4 singles and Sophomore Tim Spangler, playing right field in place of starting pitcher Tim Donnally, cracked a double to drive in 2 runs. Dover responded with a run off 3 singles to make the score 8-2. Evan Chang led off the bottom of the 5th with a single, but was forced at 2nd on a fielder's choice. Sam Rose got on via a dropped third strike. A Westphalen single drove in one run and a triple by Spangler picked up two more. The inning ended with Summit down 8-5.
Summit threatened in the bottom of the 7th. Singles by Kevin Lackaye and Westphalen, followed by a walk to pinch hitter Kevin McAvey loaded the bases with the tieing runs with 2 out. The next batter was struck out, ending the game.
It is worth noting that Sophomore Tim Spangler, in his first varsity game, had a double and a triple to drive in 4 of Summit's 5 runs.
