Summit's opening game of the season was played in very cold windy weather against a perennially strong Gov. Livingston. While the game ended in a loss, there were a number of bright spots. First, Matt Carbone got his first Varsity start and pitched a fine 5 1/3 innings. He allowed only 1 earned run off 4 hits and only 2 walks. Evan Chang pitched the final 1 2/3 innings and allowed 2 hits, 1 walk and no earned runs. All-in-all a very nice start by the pitching staff.

After 5 innings the game was tied 1-1 and the Summit defense was looking good. Unfortunately, 2 key errors in the 6th inning allowed 4 unearned runs and essentially put the game out of reach. GL brought in their ace Corsi in the 6th inning and, while he did allow a run, all six outs were strikeouts.

Summit had three real opportunities to score in the first 4 innings. The bases were loaded with one out in the 1st inning on three walks, but a popup and a strikeout ended the inning. In the 3rd inning Eric Della Piazza hit a huge shot to center that would have been over the fence at Memorial Field. It ended up a triple and he was left stranded. Kevin Lackaye had a leadoff single in the 4th and moved to 3rd on a sacrifice bunt by Fred Westphalen and a ground out , but was stranded.

Summit got on the score board in 5th when Marc Shatata hit a drive to left center that was good for 3 bases, with a close play at third. The throw in from the outfield got past the 3rd baseman and Shahata came home with the tying run. Unfortunately, the previous batter, who had been walked, was picked off, otherwise Summit would have had a 2-1 lead.
