Something happened today at Memorial Field that hasn't happened in Summit baseball since 1998 (when Jared Chellevold no-hit Brearly in the UCT) -- Kevin Lackaye threw a no hit - no run game. It was a masterful performance, but not without some high drama. In the very first inning Lackaye, who had previously given up only one walk all year, inexplicably walked three straight batters on 13 pitches. This loaded the bases with only one out. After a discussion with Coach Zaleski, Lackaye got the batter to popup to himself and followed that up by getting the third out on a 4-3 ground ball. From there on Lackaye was invincible and retired the next 16 batters in order. But, with 2 out in the top of the 6th, the potential 3rd out was safe on an infield error. Uncharacteristically, Lackaye hit the next batter. Now the tieing runs were on base. Lackaye calmly struck out the next batter, but the 3rd strike was dropped and the batter was safe. Now the bases were loaded. Instead of letting this get to him Lackaye convincingly struck out the the next batter to finish off the 6th. In the final inning Lackaye got three quick outs, throwing only 9 pitches.
Summit provided the winning margin in the 4th inning in a classic 2 out rally. Tim Donnally singled and Eddie Hagan was safe on a throwing error by the shortstop. Lackaye helped his cause with an RBI single and Evan Chang drove in the 2nd run with another single. Donnally made a great catch in deep right field to rob Mendham of an extra base hit in the 3rd and help preserve the no-hitter
All-in-all a very well played and exciting ball game. I will be checking with Coach Dietz to determine exactly when the last no-hitter was pitched by a Summit player.
