This was a rotten day to be playing baseball. It started out in light showers and ended in steady rain. To make things worse the temperature dropped about 10 degrees in the course of the game. The wet ball made precision throwing difficult and, as it turned out, many of Summit's errors were throwing.
Summit scored the first run of the game. Kevin Lackaye started the game with a double and scored on Eric Della Piazza's infield out. Evan Chang got the starting pitching assignment. Chang got the first two batters out 6-3 but then things started to go downhill. Two singles, a double and a walk generated 3 Mendham runs in the bottom of the first. Mendham added 3 more runs in the 2nd via 3 singles and a double. Tim Donnally took over the mound in the 3rd inning and promptly walked the first two batters. In spite of that start he would have escaped the inning without giving up a run were it not for a barrage of throwing errors. Donnally gave up another unrearned run the 5th. For the 3 innings he pitched he allowed only 2 hit and 3 unearned runs. Summit got its only other run in the 4th inning. Tim Spangler drew a leadoff walk and Fred Westphalen singled. Spangler was driven in by a Marc Shahata scrifice fly to left field.
After Summit had batted in the 6th the umpires decided to call a halt to the sloppy mess.
