2006 Summit Volleyball 2006 Summit JV Volleyball
  Date  Time Opponent  JVarsity  (1-10)
Fri 09/084:00PM Parsippany Hills A Lost (25-14, 7-25, 25-22) The young JV Hilltoppers (only 3 returners from last year's JV) looked nervous and tense early in game 1 as Parsippany took a commanding 13-1 lead. To their credit, the team never gave up and although Parsippany won the game 25-14, Summit outscored Parsippany 13-12 in that stretch.

Game 2 featured a much more relaxed JV team that took charge early and never looked back. Led by the strong serving of Liz Honold, the defensive play of Junior Captain Steph Zamora and the offensive firepower of Abby Mell, the Hilltoppers made short work of Parsippany in game 2 (25-7).

Game 3 was an outstanding back and forth affair with both teams taking control at different times early on
(6-5 and 12-8 Parsippany). Parsippany served a bit tougher at this point and took a commanding 18-11 lead. It looked bleak for Summit especially after another 2 rotations Parsippany had forged a 22-14 lead. But Summit never gave up. Behind the serving of sophomore Abby Mell, Summit came storming back to within 1 at 23-22. Unfortunately the comeback came up a bit short and Parsippany closed it out at 25-22.

Tue 09/124:00PM Hanover Park H Lost (25-13, 25-22) In a similar performance to Parsippany, the JV squad was down quickly and early (14-5) before they made a serious move in game #1. Game 2 proved to be far more competitive as Summit charged out of the gates well and held a 20-16 lead late. The Hilltoppers could not solve HP's difficult serving in 2 rotations and it cost them here.

Markeetah Anderson led the team with 2 aces while co-captain Steph Zamora had 5 digs and 4 service points. Abby Mell, Jen Butler and Lucy Wise -who had a team leading 2 kills- combined for 6 blocks.

Thu 09/144:00PM Mendham H Lost (25-21, 25-10) The JV squad had a similar game to their previous match. Game #1 turned out to be the team's best performance as they matched up with the more experienced Mendham side. The game was close throughout but Summit took a late 21-19 lead and seemed to be on the way to a win in game 1. But, once again, critical passing errors cost the team late and Mendham finished the match on a roll and closed out Summit 25-21.

Summit's loss in game 1 seemed to deflate the squad and the team didn't seem to be able to rebound after that. Mendham took control early and never let go, earning a 25-10 victory.

Tue 09/194:00PM West Essex A Lost (25-21,25-11) In a pattern reminiscent of the previous matches, the Hilltoppers could only muster 1 solid game in the match. Summit actually led most of the game 1 and had a 21-19 lead late but the Hilltoppers could not hold it and succumbed to the Knights by a 25-21 score.

Summit's 4 serving errors in the game cost them dearly in the game. Game 2 saw the Knights take charge early and never look back. After the lead was 13-3, Summit attempted to crawl back in the game (14-7) but West Essex went on another run of 5 points to take a commanding 19-7 lead that would not diminish. The final tally of 25-11 reflected the dominance of the Knights in game 2.

Mon 09/254:00PM West Morris Central Lost (25-11,25-10) The JV squad had a rough outing today as they fell quickly in 2 games to a strong West Morris team. The Hilltoppers could not find any consistent passing and thus, could not generate any consistent attack to counteract the power game of West Morris.

Hilltopper bright spots were Liz Honold with her consistent passing and Macarena Moreno's serving and defensive play.

Tue 09/264:00 PM Livingston H Lost (25-12, 24-26, 25-10) The JV Hilltoppers lost in a tough fought match versus Livingston on Tuesday. The Livingston attack pounded the Hilltoppers in game 1 but the team played well despite the score. The passing, a weakness in previous games, was much improved but the lack of a consistent attack hurt the Hilltoppers in game 1.

Game 2 saw a better serving and attacking offense from the Hilltoppers which, along with their defense, kept the Hilltopper's chances alive until late in the match. At 24-24, a key net violation by Livingston turned the tide and Summit closed out the game 26-24.

The energy the Hilltoppers spent in the comeback of game 2 was never recovered for game 3. Summit's passing deteriorated and, logically, so did their attack. The JV squad did the best they could to stay in the game defensively but the unending pressure created by Livingston was too much for the Hilltoppers and they fell in a tough fought match, 25-10.

Captain Steph Zamora, Jen Butler (also led team with 4 blocks), Wendoly Vargas and Macarena Moreno led the squad with a combined 22 digs while Ilia Fiene led the Hilltopper offensive charge with 3 kills and 2 blocks.

Thu 09/284:00PM Mount Olive H Won (25-16, 25-11) Congratulations to the JV Hilltoppers for their outstanding victory over Mt. Olive. The outcome of the match was never in doubt as the squad controlled every facet of the match from start to finish.

Captain Steph Zamora led the team from the service line with 9 service points and 2 aces to go along with her team leading 5 digs. Abby Mell's 4 kills led the Hilltopper offense and Macarena Moreno's 4 digs steadied the Hilltopper defense. "Mac" and Markeetah Anderson combined for 6 aces to keep the Mt. Olive passing game in check.

Fri 09/294:00PM Parsippanv Hills A Lost (28-26, 25-11) The JV squad came out flat against their opponent, trailing by as much as 16-7 before waking up. The team fought to 16-11 and 18-14 but did not seem to be able to get any closer. Then, as if by cue, the Hilltoppers began to play like a team with nothing to lose. The seemingly insurmountable 22-16 lead was erased and Summit actually took a 23-22 lead. Par Hills regained serve and was serving for the match but Summit found a way to stop them... again, and again and again.
Unfortunately, Summit was not able to put away their chances and fell 28-26 in a thrilling game.

The 2nd game proved to be a less exciting and more predictable as Par Hills raced out to an 18-3 lead that they would never relinquish and closed out the game 25-11.

Thu 10/054:00PM Parsippany H Lost (17-25, 25-16, 25-14)The JV squad looked to make it 2 for 2 for the day and follow the Varsity's victory over Parsippany. It looked very optimistic early on as SHS and Parsippany traded points throughout the early stages of game 1.
Summit looked to be playing well and, unlike the 1st match of the season, SHS did not fold late in game 1 and dominated going away winning the game 25-17.

The 2nd game proved to be a little more difficult.
Parsippany took control early and, even though SHS did not quit, the Hilltoppers could not find a way to overcome Parsippany's tough serving and fell 25-16 in game 2.

In game 3, unfortunately, the Parsippany serving and offense was too much for the Hilltoppers to handle.
Parsippany took control early and never looked back as Summit struggled just to stay in the game. Summit lost the game and match 25-14.

Sophomore setter Markeetah Anderson and middle blocker Jen Butler led the way with 8 digs each and Anderson added a season-high 8 assists. Sophomore Abby Mel led the Hilltopper attack with 5 kills. Sophomore Lindsay Moore continued her solid play from the front line getting 2 kills.

sat 10/07 Chatham Lost 25-20, 25-18 The JV squad played a competitive match this day but key serve receive errors cost the team dearly. In both games, the Hilltoppers were competitive and had streaks of inspired play but the passing errors kept rearing their ugly head and it was too much too overcome in the late stages of each game.

Abby Mell led the Hilltopper attack with 2 kills while Steph Zamora added 8 digs. Anne Chan chipped in 2 aces as Lucy Wise and Jen Butler each had a block.

Tue 10/104:00PM Hanover Park A Lost 25-14, 25-18 The Lady Hilltoppers fell to Hanover Park again in the rematch. Summit found themselves in a tight game each time but Hanover pulled away each time and was never in any real danger. Summit's serve receive was once again a weak point and therefore it sabotaged any real offense Summit could muster.
Thu 10/124:00PM Mendham A Lost 25-7,25-19 The JV Hilltoppers were outplayed from the service line and could not match the Mendham passing and serving prowess. Summit held an early lead in game 2 behind the serving of Steph Zamora and Abby Mell but could not hold their lead as they succumbed to the unrelenting Mendham serving attack.
Tue 10/174:00PM West Morris Central H Lost 25-10, 25-17 The JV Lady Hilltoppers had a tough contest ahead of them to try to earn their 2nd victory. Things did not start well as the Hilltoppers could not handle the West Morris serve and therefore could not run an effective counter-attack. West Morris just had too many weapons and Summit was beaten easily 25-10.

The 2nd game saw a much more competitive Hilltopper squad that stayed in the match until the latter stages. Summit served well and passed better to keep them in it. Summit lost 25-17 but improved drastically from their first outing versus this highly skilled opponent.

Thu 10/264:00PM Mount Olive A Won 25-17, 25-21 In an outstanding effort, the Hilltoppers took care of the Mt. Olive squad in a spirited 2 game match. Summit played well in all phases of the game and got key contributions from Liz Honold and Macarena Moreno on defense, Abby Mel from the frontline and Anne Chan from the service line. Captain Elaine Gonzalez led the team with 3 assists.
