When Summit did push the ball into HP’s offensive end, great effort by midfielders Maddie Kaplan, Jenna Wilson and Lexi Zalk to keep control of the ball and distribute began to pay off. The offensive star of the game was Annie Rush who scored the only first half goal off of a corner kick by Shannon Murphy. Hanover Park provided some tense moments with a couple of break aways but terrific goaltending by Maggie Groves and Shelby Macmillan thwarted all of them. Hanover's only goal came on a penalty kick from a highly controversial call, which at the time tied the game 1-1.  Instead of getting down by the call and goal, Summit elevated their game and responded by scoring 2 more goals, both by Annie Rush.  Summit continued to apply pressure on HP’s goal thanks to the efforts of Kelly Grouss and Ariel Lefkowitz until time expired. Overall the first half was pretty even, with Annie Rush scoring Summit’s first goal on a pass from Jenna Wilson at the midpoint of the first half. In the second half, Mendham came out strong, but Summit continued to turn them back.  Summit sealed the game with their second goal, which everyone will be talking about for the rest of the year. This goal was set up by an outstanding cross by Maddie Kaplan from the right side to the left side of the 18.  There it found left outside middie Meaghan Carey’s powerful left foot, and in one touch she drilled a ball into the upper left hand corner of the goal slicing away from the keeper.  Torrie Hayes, Kristen Railey, Jenna Wilson and Shannon Murphy controlled the midfield and blasts by Ariel Lefkowitz and Kelly Grouss just missed their mark.

Wed 10/11 4:00PM Parsippany H

Won 2-0 In slippery and wet Memorial field, the powerful JV Lady Hilltoppers were hindered in their terrific passing game and Parsippany was able to stay close for most of the game.  The JV’s relentless pressure, led by Annie Rush, Meaghan Carey, Maddie Kaplan, Jenna Wilson and Julia Espy kept the Parsippany goalie busy, but the half ended in a 0-0 tie. Finally late in the second half the JV broke through with a goal from striker Ariel Lefkowitz who drilled a shot into the back of the net, and Kelly Grouss, who hit a great ball from 20 yards out. The defense led by Allie McGuire, Caroline Peck and Kylie McKenna, and goalies Shelby Macmillan and Maggie Groves, played exceptionally well, leading to the JV’s second straight shutout.

Fri 10/13 4:00PM Chatham A Won 5-1  Summit JV Lady Hilltoppers traveled to Chatham today in anticipation of a close game against an arch rival.  From the opening whistle the JV meant business and scored three goals in the first 20 minutes. Maddie Kaplan got things going with a quick goal on a powerful kick, and striker Ariel Lefkowitz got the next two as she beat Chatham’s off sides trap. When Kelly Grouss scored to make it 4-0 the rout was on.  A slight defensive lapse by the defense allowed Chatham’s only goal, the first goal given up by the JV since September 22! Caroline Peck, Adele Molina, Shannon Murphy, Kylie McKenna and Allie McGuire have proved impenetrable at the back line with a combination of great communication and hard nosed defense.  The second half saw a much closer contest as Chatham stiffened their defense. Offensive thrusts were provided by Annie Rush, Meaghan Carey and Rachel Boylan for Summit.  Some nice work by Annie Helmer, Kristin Railey, Carolyn McElroy and Torrie Hayes kept Chatham bottled up, and finally Jenna Wilson broke through with a terrific strike for the final margin. The goaltending duo of Maggie Groves and Shelby Macmillan had great games as Chatham has a good offense and they turned away some tough attempts.
Mon 10/16 4:00PM Dayton 1st round UCT

Won 7-0  In a dominating performance the JV Lady Hilltoppers opened their Union County Tournament with a textbook performance, defeating Dayton 7-0.  The JV opened the scoring in what has to be the quickest goal of the year, when Ariel Lefkowitz took the opening tap and sent the ball wide to Jenna Wilson on the right. Wilson made a move and crossed the ball all the way to the left side where left middie Meaghan Carey settled the ball and then drilled it into the left corner for a 1-0 at the 16 second mark! Carey figured in the second goal when off a throw in she lofted a beautiful high ball right to the 10 yard line and middie Shannon Murphy leaped and got her head on the ball and guided it into the left corner for a 2-0 lead at the 10 minute mark. Their third goal was the JV at its finest as sweeper Allison McGuire hit a nice ball into the box and Annie Helmer on the fly slid the ball to Shannon Murphy who drilled the ball into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead at the 16 minute mark.  The rest of the half saw the JV control the ball at the midfield, thanks to Caroline McElroy, Maddie Kaplan, Torrie Hayes and Kristin Railey, and then feed Kelly Grouss, Annie Rush and Julia Espy for shots on goal. McElroy stole a clearing ball at the 25 and hit a terrific ball into the net for a 4-0 lead at halftime.  Shelby Macmillan recorded the first half shut out in goal.  The second half was no different, as the JV played ball control the entire 40 minutes.  A nice move by Carey down the left side set up her cross to Rush who pounded a ball in with the goalie on top of her.  In the middle of the field, Rachel Boylan and Adele Molina kept the ball in Dayton’s end, and the defense of Kylie McKenna and Caroline Peck was perfect. Peck had a superior game, rarely just kicking the ball downfield, but carrying the ball to space, making moves around defenders, and distributing the ball to her offense in a perfect scoring position.  The final two goals were scored by Kristin Railey on a terrific header and Lefkowitz who scored unassisted on a nice left foot shot for the final 7-0 margin. Maggie Groves continued her fine goalkeeping in the second half to preserve the shutout.

Mon 10/23 4:00PM Cranford H 2nd Round UCT

Won 2-0  Before a big crowd, the JV Lady Hilltoppers took to the freezing field at Memorial after a week’s layoff and showed no signs of rustiness in a commanding 2-0 victory over 5th seeded Cranford. The Hilltoppers intricate ball movement and spacing was on display as Cranford posed a high caliber opponent for the JV, but it took little time for Summit’s midfield of Maddie Kaplan and Shannon Murphy to take control of the middle, and distribute consistent wide balls to wings Jenna Wilson and Meaghan Carey who pressed the ball into the corners. The Lady Hilltoppers play an incredibly aggressive offense, constantly sending girls for runs to the wings and towards the goal in the hopes of banging in a loose ball. With the pressure building on Cranford, Maddie Kaplan stopped a ball from clearing and knocked it to striker Kelly Grouss, who took one dribble and let fly a high, hard shot that flew into the upper reaches of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 12 minute mark. This seemed to wake up Cranford, and the crowd was treated to terrific soccer on both ends, with the ball moving between the 18’s.  Summit is able to play aggressively because of their solid defense, and it was on display today, as Kylie McKenna and Caroline Peck shut down Cranford’s attack. When Cranford was able to penetrate into Summit’s end, they were met by sweeper and field general Allie McGuire, who played a perfect game today. Whether she was sending her strikers downfield with powerful clearing kicks or sweeping over to the corner to steal a ball from a wing, McGuire was flawless, and even had time to take a number of well placed corner kicks for Summit. With Shelby Macmillan providing steady goalkeeping, Summit left the field at halftime 1-0. The second half began like the first half ended, and Cranford initially had the better of play. But Summit inserted Annie Rush at striker, and along side Ariel Lefkowitz, no team has a more aggressive pair of strikers.  Needing a second goal to get some breathing room, Rush provided the cushion with a terrific steal,  beating two defenders and striking a rocket from the 18 into the left corner for a 2-0 lead at the 20 minute mark. The JV kept Cranford away from their goal and applied more pressure, with Annie Helmer, Torrie Hayes and Kristin Railey providing some offensive pushes with their speed, and Caroline McElroy, Rachel Boylan and Julia Espy feeding them from the wings.  The last 5 minutes provided some real excitement, as Cranford took a direct kick deep in Summit’s end, only to have their shot on goal kicked away by Adele Molina. With time running out, Cranford took a great shot from the 18 that was curving away from keeper Maggie Groves, who somehow got a hand on the ball to deflect it away and preserve Summit’s second UCT win. Groves and Macmillan have now allowed only 1 goal for the past month!
