The opening game of the season couldn't have had a better beginning. Summit took the opening kickoff on their 20 yard line and proceeded to drive 80 yards in 10 plays. Eight of the plays were running plays that featured Travis Marchell (5 carries), Edgar Ozols (3 carries), Matt Ruark(1 carry) and the final 3 yard plunge by Matt Defonzo. In the midst of the drive a pass to David Roduit for 15 yards kept the drive alive. Ozols kicked the extra point and Summit was on top 7-0.

Summit kicked off and the defense held Mendham to three and a punt. Summit got the ball back on the Summit 40. It looked like the offense was picking up where it had left off when it opened a good hole for Marchell. He took the ball deep into Mendham territory where a fumble gave Mendham the ball in the Summit 43. The Summit defense held an Mendham was forced to try a field goal that went wide. Things began to change when Summit was forced to punt. Mendham started on their 22 yard line. Two running plays were stuffed, gaining only 2 yards. However, back-to-back passes went 48 and 36 yards to knot the score at 7-7. Summit got a taste of what was to come when Mendham got the ball on their 32 with 1:35 left in the half. Two draw plays sandwiched an incomplete pass and took the ball to Summit's 14. Summit stiffened and forced a 27 yard field goal , leaving Mendham up 10-7 at the half.

The 2nd half was all Mendham. It was like someone threw a switch and Mendham became a different team. They scored on 3 of their 4 2nd half possessions. Summit seemed powerless to stop their running game.

Summit did mount a good drive late in the game. Down 24-7 Summit got the ball on their 20 yard line, A pass to Marchell covered 68 yards and gave Summit a 1st down on the Mendham 12 . Five play later Marchell covered the final 3 yards for a TD. Unfortunately, Mendham got a great return of Ozols' kickoff and ended up on the Summit 40. Ten play later the score was 31-14.
