Summit kept its State Tournament hopes alive with a cliff hanger victory over Morris Hills. Summit has 3 games remaining to play before the February 3rd cutoff date and now must win 2 of the 3 to qualify.
Morris Hills looked very tough to beat in the 1st quarter as they ran off to a 17-12 lead. Summit came storming back behind three 3-pointers (2 by Chris Kehoe and 1 by Adolpha Arietta) and 4 points from Tim Donnally. In fact Summit took an 8 point lead at one point in the quarter before Morris Hills turned on the heat and got back to within 2 points. In the 3rd quarter Summit built a 7 point lead , helped by 7 points from Travis Marchell.
Entering the very exciting final eight minutes it looked like Summit held a comfortable 7 point lead and the momentum. That disappeared quickly as Morris Hills scored the first 5 points before Donnally scored to make it 43-39. Some loose ball handling by Summit led to 4 quick points by Morris Hills and the score was tied. Kehoe nailed a jumper but Morris Hills answered with a field goal and a free throw to take the lead for the first time since the middle of the 2nd quarter. At the 2 minute mark Marchell made a steal and a bucket to get Summit back up by a point. Summit regained possession, with less than a minute to play but after a timeout Morris Hills stole the inbounds pass and raced to a layup. Morris Hills was back on top with 45 seconds on the clock. With the clock running down under 20 seconds Donnally sank a short jumper and Summit was back up 49-48. However, with 6 seconds remaining Summit was called for a foul and Morris Hills went to the foul line. To this point Morris Hills had sunk 10 of their 13 free throws and the Summit fans could hardly stand to look as the first attempt rolled around and fell out. Now the tension was unbearable. The 2nd shot looked good but hit the back iron and bounced out . Summit lived to fight another day. |
