The Lady Hilltoppers traveled to Edison High School for a rare Saturday afternoon game. With the February 3rd cut-off date for the state tournament in the back of the 7-5 girl's minds, they took to the court with plenty of confidence and determination. The tone was set early by Danielle Scott and Jamie Osmulski as each scored four points in the first quarter. Alex Reid made several key defensive stops with one resulting in a steal and driving lay-up to pace Summit to a 12-6 lead at the end of the period. The second quarter was more of the same for the Lady Hilltoppers as Summit stepped up the pressure which led to 5 steals in the quarter and a 27-11 halftime lead. A vocal home crowd lifted the spirits of the home team after the break. However, an early Edison run was thwarted by the stand out play of Danielle Scott as she continued to dominate with many buckets in the paint. The Lady Hilltoppers cruised to a 36-24 lead after three periods. The defense rose to the occasion in the fourth quarter, holding Edison to 6 points as the Summit squad posted a 47-30 victory which propelled them into the state tournament for the second straight year. The Lady Hilltoppers shot the ball extremely well from the field and an amazing 15 for 18 from the free throw line. Their shooting, combined with less turnovers, have fueled their recent run. The squad travels to West Essex on Tuesday evening as Summit looks to avenge an earlier season triple overtime loss. (Reported by Steve Murphy) |
