The Summit Lady Hoopsters traveled to Mendham for a tough first test of the season, and based on what every spectator witnessed, this could be a great season for the Hilltoppers. Even though they came out on the short end, the girls served notice to the rest of the Iron Hills conference that Summit is no longer a guaranteed W in the opponent’s column. Summit and Mendham came out hard right from the opening tip, resulting in a frenetic game that saw the teams score 34 points combined in the quarter, with Summit getting balanced scoring from 6 girls in the period, led by Jamie Osmulski and her sister Megan. Summit played a pressing and trapping defense and created a lot of turnovers, with Melissa Scott and Deanna Nelson making key steals. But they also recorded a number of foul calls, which would come back to haunt them. The period ended 15-19, and Summit had 8 fouls. The second quarter saw much of the same, as every time Mendham made a run Summit responded accordingly. In fact, the largest lead of the game for either team was 6 points, and after the first quarter each subsequent quarter had the same 4 point margin. The second half saw Mendham pressing all over the floor, but the seasoned leadership of Katelyn Allocco calmly brought the ball up against pressure. Point guards Danielle Allocco and Jenna Wilson made slashing drives to the basket, and dished off to the open Summit players. A nice drive by Alex Reid who laid it off for Danielle Scott resulted in a basket that tied the score at 47 with 7 minutes to go, and the margin was still 2 with 1:26 seconds to go after Wilson made two free throws. Mendham, who made an unbelievable percentage of their free throws, widened the lead to 3 with 21 seconds left, but Summit got off a final three pointer that barely missed and they were forced to foul.
