In a disappointing end to a great year, the Varsity Lady Hilltoppers traveled to the not so friendly environs of the Orange gym to take on the highly rated Hurricanes of Orange.  Summit fans were numerous in attendance and outnumbered the Orange fans, but Orange’s entire marching band was also in attendance, making it very hard to hear anything the coach was telling his players! With Summit winning the opening tap, turning the ball over, and Orange scoring on a driving lay-up, the game was on! In the most entertaining and highly charged quarter of the year, the Lady Hilltoppers took everything the supercharged offense of Orange could throw at them and came away trailing only 17-15.  Summit got some key hoops in the paint from Katelyn Allocco and Danielle Scott, and some nice rebounding by Shannon Murphy and Alex Reid in the quarter.  Jenna Wilson, who played 28 consecutive minutes under constant full court pressure, did an amazing job breaking Orange’s press, and the gym was buzzing.  Orange came out in the second quarter and got two very questionable calls against Scott which really turned the tide of the quarter.  Orange got a lot of short shots in the paint on some beautiful jumpers and Summit’s shots just seemed to roll off the rim each time. A strong put back by Murphy and a nice corner jumper by Reid seemed to stem the tide, but before you knew it, Orange had rung up 27 points in the highest scoring quarter against Summit all year, missing almost nothing from the field or foul line.  Facing a 16 point deficit seemed insurmountable, but the Hilltoppers came out hard in the third, with Jamie Osmulski and Megan Osmulski pressing all over the court looking for a turnover somewhere, but Scott got her 3rd and 4th foul which deflated the Summit rally. Only Katelyn Allocco was able to solve the Orange defense, penetrating down the lane and then turning for a soft jump hook for 4 points in the quarter. The fourth quarter gave coach a chance to get the rest of his team in, and they finished the game with a flourish, as Danielle Allocco made a nice steal for a lay-up and a three point shot, Deanna Nelson and Abby Mell played tough inside the lane, and freshman Cassie Hall and Emily Cristaldi got some quality minutes in a state game. The difference was Orange’s star small forward, who lit up the gym for 30 points on spectacular drives, deadly outside shooting, and perfect free throws, which was the point difference in the game. Scott finished with 18 points and 8 rebounds in limited playing time, but it could not dampen the great career she had in Summit.  And with 12 players returning next year from the state tournament squad, the fans in attendance can’t wait for next season to come!
