In an amazing game that went to triple overtime and left the players and their fans exhausted, Summit dropped their home opener in a heartbreaker 53-60. An 11-2 outburst from the opening tap seemed to bode well for the Lady Hilltoppers, and they got balanced scoring in the period from Katelyn and Danielle Allocco, Jenna Wilson and Alex Reid to go along with Danielle Scotts 5 points in the opening quarter. Some nice drives by Deanna Nelson and Megan Osmulski also resulted in opportunities for Summit. But after shooting 50 % for the first quarter their accuracy dropped in the second and West Essex crept back into the game with the halftime score 22-18 Summit. West Essex came out with a very aggressive trapping 1-3-1 zone in the second half, but solid shooting returned in the third quarter as Danielle Scott had a monster quarter scoring 9 on 4-5 shooting. But the balance in the scoring seemed to dissipate and this would be an omen of things to come. West Essex really stepped up their intensity and the shots that were falling in the first three quarters stopped. A monster three from WE's center put WE in their first lead but a bucket by Danielle Scott and some clutch free throws from soph's Shannon Murphy and Melissa Scott tied the game up at the end of regulation. There was very little scoring in the first OT as Summit's Reid got the lone basket and at the very end of the first OT, West Essex scored to tie again. In the second overtime Summit relied on their senior leadership as Megan Osmulski hit a huge three to respond to West Essex's three point lead and Danielle Scott hit a big bucket to take a two point lead. With only 9 seconds left in the second overtime Summit lost the ball out of bounds on a questionable call, and after a great screen knocked the Summit defender out West Essex got their leading scorer free for a lay up at the buzzer for another tie. Entering the third overtime all the players seemed to be dragging, but Summit got a quick bucket off a rebound from Reid to take a two point lead, but WE hit on a three point play and then a monster three point field goal from their center again and that was too much for the Lady Hilltoppers to overcome. Summit again had problems from the free throw line and was outscored by 7 on the line by WE which was the difference in the game.
