Summit's first State Tournament game in five years got off to a bad start. In the bottom of the 1st inning Bernards managed to score 3 unearned runs on zero hits. The leadoff batter was hit by the pitcher and after one out the 3rd batter was walked. The cleanup hitter lofted a routine fly ball that was dropped, loading the bases. An infield out allowed one run to score. Another walk was followed by an infield error and suddenly Bernards was up 3-0. Bernards added 2 more runs in the 2nd and one more in the 3rd. Meanwhile, Summit managed only one hit over the first three innings.

Undeterred, Summit came alive in the top of the 4th inning. Eddie Hagan began the inning with a single, but was erased on a fielder's choice. Tim Spangler was walked and Kevin Lackaye singled to load the bases. A big double by Tim Cotter drove in 3 runs. Kenny Miller brought home Cotter with a single. Miller moved to 2nd on an infield out and scored when Ben Roessle singled. Suddenly Summit was back in the game, 6-5.

Bernards picked another run in the 6th, so Summit came to their last at bat down 7-5, and facing a new pitcher. After one out Eric Della Piazza was hit by the pitcher and went to second on a wild pitch. Hagan singled to put runners at 3rd and 1st Evan Chang hit a ground ball that had double play written all over it. However, Chang, with a burst of speed, beat the throw to keep the game alive. One run scored on the play. Tim Spangler was hit by the pitcher and now the go ahead run was on base and the tension was growing. But it was not to be as a 4-3 play ended the game and Summit's season.
