Summit managed to bunch all of its seven hits in the first 3 innings to produce 4 runs. Mendham, on the other hand, had 11 hits (7 in the last two innings) and left 11 runners stranded (six in the final two tension filled innings).
Summit scored a run in the 1st on a single by the pitcher Evan Chang and a single by Tim Spangler. Spangler's shot got through the legs of the center fielder allowing Chang to score. Mendham tied the score in the top of the 3rd inning but Summit added 3 runs in the bottom of the inning. Eric Della Piazza started things off with a double, Eddie Hagan singled and Chang doubled to score Della Piazza. Spangler singled again to score Hagan and Chang. Summit would not get another hit in the game.
In the top of the 6th Mendham opened the inning with a double followed by a single to score a run. A fly out to center was followed by a fielder's choice. Two out and a man on first. Two more singles loaded the bases and put the the go ahead run at 1st. Spangler came on in relief and got the 3rd out via a pop up to Eric Forsell. Whew! In Mendham's last at bat there was more tension. After one out, the batter drew a walk that was followed by back-to-back singles and a run scored. The score now stood 4-3. A single, a strike out and another single loaded the bases with two out. Spangler got the batter to hit a towering foul pop-up. Three players converged on it for the game winning out, but it hit a glove and popped out. Nails were being bitten. Finally, after two balls, the batter hit a ground ball to Tim Cotter at 3rd who threw him out at 1st by a step.
