This was a big victory for Summit baseball. Morris Hills came into the game with an 8-3 record and a reputation as one of the top teams in the conference. Summit hung on to win 6-4. There was some high excitement in the final 3 innings, which I will get to later.

Kevin Lackaye was the starting pitcher, in spite of the fact that he had started the Oratory game on Saturday and pitched 3 innings. Summit failed to score in the top of the 1st inning and Lackaye got off to a rocky start in the bottom. The first batter crushed a triple on the second pitch and the next batter hit the first pitch for a clean single. Three pitches, two hits and one run and everyone in the stands was a bit uneasy. Lackaye got the next batter to ground out and the cleanup hitter to strike out and things looked better. The 5th hitter singled to score a second runner before the 6th batter grounded out to end the inning. Happily, Lackaye settled into his normal pattern and Morris Hills would not threaten again until the 5th inning.

In the top of the 2nd Tim Cotter was walked after one out. Then consecutive singles by Matt Carbone, Kenny Miller and Ben Roessle scored two runs to tie the game. Eric Della Piazza came up next and rapped a double to drive in Miller for the 3rd run, and the lead. Summit added three more runs in the 4th on a single by Roessle, an error on Della Piazza's ground ball, a double by Eddie Hagan and a single by Evan Chang. So, going to the bottom of the 5th inning Summit had a solid 6-2 lead and lackaye seemed on a roll. However, after striking out the lead off batter he ran into a rough spot. It started when Lackaye uncharacteristically hit the next batter. A Summit error on the next hitter's ground ball momentarily seemed to throw Lackaye off stride because he walked the next batter on four pitches to load the bases and bring the tieing run to the plate. It appeared that he was possibly running out of gas, but Lackaye showed what he is made of by striking out the next two batters to get out of the jam.

The last of the 6th brought a very rare event. The leadoff hitter singled but was out on the first half of a possible double play. However, the throw to first went wide and allowed the runner to get to second. Now for the bazaar part. Lackaye was called for a balk and that put the runner on 3rd, On the very next pitch he was called for a second balk and the runner was waved home. No one could recollect Kevin ever having a balk, let alone two in a row. Now the lead was only 6-3.

To start Morris Hills' final at bat the lead off hitter hit a 3-2 pitch deep to center field. Tim Spangler raced to the fence and made a great catch. However, he fell over the fence and some felt he dropped the ball as he hit the ground while others felt he hung on to ball for the out (only Spangler knows). The two umpires, neither of whom had a good view of the play, met for a discussion on the mound and eventually ruled it a home run. Now the lead was down to 2 runs and Lackaye's pitch count for the game had reached 100. He walked the next batter on 5 pitches, bringing the tieing run to the plate. On the 2nd pitch the batter flied out to center, one out! Lackaye, who walks fewer that two a game, walked the next batter on 4 pitches. After a meeting on the mound Lackaye appeared to carry the day and continued. He got the next batter to fly out to center on the 1st pitch, but the tieing runs remained on base. A wild pitch moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Now the tieing runs were in scoring position. The tension was almost unbearable. The next batter hit a hard shot to the left of Hagan. He fielded the ball and threw to 1st for the game ending out!
