(reported by Dick Difenderfer) The second man up for Morris Hills lined a home run over the left field fence, not a good omen. Their four hits in the second inning brought in two more runs, and in the fourth a Summit error opened the door for two more, both unearned. Meanwhile the Summit bats were silent, with only two hits in four innings.

They came alive in the bottom of the fifth. Matt Carbone started the inning with a single. Ben Roessle walked, as did Eric Della Piazza. Eddie Hagen brought in two runs with a single. Evan Chang hit what should have been a double play ball, but the second baseman muffed it. Next Tim Spangler hit what might have been a double play ball, but the short stop threw it at the second baseman's feet. Another error, and two runs scored. Now it was a one run ballgame. Morris Hills brought in a new pitcher and was greeted by a Kevin Lackaye double, driving in one run. Now the game was tied. Tim Cotter drilled a low line drive that the short stop caught at his shoe tops. He easily doubled off Lackaye. Two down and the rally seemed over Then Kenny Miller hit a double that brought in the lead run.

Both teams went down harmlessly in the sixth inning, and Morris Hills' number one and two batters were easy ground outs in the top of the seventh. The Summit fans relaxed a bit, prematurely. Four straight infield hits drove in the tieing run. It would have been worse but for the great diving stops made by Summit infielders to keep the ball from going through. In each case they ended up flat on the ground, with no way to throw the ball.

Summit started the bottom of the seventh with a ground out and a base on balls that was erased by a fielder's choice. Cotter followed with a single, putting runner on second in scoring position. Miller followed with his second double to score the winning run.

A real nail biter, but a thrilling win on a beautiful afternoon.
