(Scored by Randy Roessle) Summit won a 1st Round UC tournament game for the first time since 1998, when it went on to win the Union County Championship. Kevin Lackaye pitched a fine complete game. Summit picked up a run in each of the first 3 innings. In the 1st singles by Eric Della Piazza, Evan Chang and Tim Spangler produced the run. The second inning saw a single by Kenny Miller and triple by Della Piazza. In the 3rd inning Spangler singled, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on a passed ball. He came home on a Lackey sacrifice.
Going to the bottom of the 3rd Summit was up 3-1, but 3 Union C. hits combined with 3 Summit errors to produce 3 unearned runs, leaving Summit behind 4-3. However, Union C. returned the favor and Summit scored 2 runs via singles from Spangler and Lackaye and one Union C. error plus a pair of passed balls. A 3rd run came on a squeeze bunt by Matt Carbone. Summit gained its final two runs in the top of the 6th inning. Ben Roessle and Della Piazza walked and Spangler hit a 2 out double to drive them in.
Lackaye really up the heat after the 3rd inning and allowed only 3 more hits and no runs.
Summit will meet Scotch Plains at 4PM Wednesday in the UCT quarterfinals.
