Wow! This was a fantastic baseball game. Great pitching by both sides, excellent defensive plays, non-stop tension and. best of all, Summit won. It was a classic pitchers duel. Kevin Lackaye, coming off the sick list, pitched arguably the best game of his Summit career. Over the 9 innings he pitched he allowed only 1 run, and it was unearned. At the end of regulation (7 innings) Lackaye had needed only 85 pitches.

Entering the bottom of the 4th no one had scored, or even threatened to score. Matt Carbone led off the inning with a single and moved to 2nd on a passed ball. Tim Cotter laid down a nice sacrifice bunt to move Carbone to 3rd. Kevin Lackaye drove in the run with a sacrifice fly to center. By the top of the 6th fans were beginning to think that one run might do it. However, after one out, West Essex's 2nd hit of the game put a player on base. Lackaye struck out the next batter for the second out An infield single moved the runner to 3rd. The next batter hit a ground ball that should have been the final out , but it was mishandled and allowed the unearned run to tie the score.

Summit had a chance in the bottom the 7th when they loaded bases on an error and two walks with two out, but nothing came of it and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the ninth the leadoff batter for WE got on via an error. After one out the next WE batter singled to right and the runner from 1st thought about taking 3rd. However, Summit trapped him in a rundown between 2nd and 3rd for the 2nd out. Lackaye then gave up only his 2nd walk of the game to put a runner in scoring position. The next batter cracked what looked like a sure single to right, but Kenny Miller made a sensational catch to end the threat. In the bottom of the 9th Eddie Hagan singled after one out. Evan Chang proceeded to rip a ball down the right field line that allowed Hagan to score all the way from first with the winning run.

On a defensive note, 3rd baseman Ben Roessle had an unusually active day with 7 hard hit balls to handle. He handled them all flawlessly, one of the best performances by a Summit 3rd baseman in many years.
