4:00PM | Won 25-23, 25-17 The JV squad began their season with a win for the first time in the last 5 years! The Hilltoppers had a rough game 1 losing 4 points due to rotational errors.
However, the steady leadership and play of Co-captains Anne Chan, Jennifer Butler and Sarah Anderson as well as the contributions of newcomers Megan Jiang and Maya Williams held the Hilltoppers in the game. Trailing 23-22, Wendoly Vargas stepped up to serve and after 1 ace and 2 service points, SHS had pulled out the come from behind win in game 1. Game 2 was a closely contested affair with both teams making runs midway through the game (SHS ran off straight points to a 13-7 lead and Parsippany 4 consecutive points to trail only 13-11) but the Hilltopper serving prowess overwhelmed Parsippany late and -leading 19-17- they closed out the match behind sophomore Simone Hairston's serving (6 service points, |

4:00PM | Lost 20-25, 25-21, 15-10 The JV squad looked as good as ever during a hard fought game 1. The Hilltopper serving kept HP under pressure and forced many free balls that the Hilltoppers converted into points.
Maybe it was overconfidence, maybe lack of concentration but one thing became clear early in game 2: mistakes were going to play a factor in the game. Summit commited uncharacteristic passing errors, and looked out of sorts on defense. HP kept pressuring the Hilltopper defense with hard, consistent serving and it looked like the game was going to be a blowout until Wendoly Vargas and Anne Chan's serving brought SHS back into the game (23-15 to 23-21). Unfortunately, the deficit was too great and Summit lost game 2. Summit fell behind early (7-2) but managed to straighten out its passing game and fought to within 3 at 9-6. HP's serving attack continued to be the difference though and within 1 rotation they had game point at 14-6. Once again the Hilltoppers used their serving (Anne Chan) to cut the lead to 14-10 and forcing a timeout from HP but the lead was too much to overcome and the Hilltoppers succumbed in game 3 15-10. Sophomore Megan Jiang continued her steady play at setter while Emily Machlin continued to be a force behind the service line. Anne Chan was steady on serve and an effective defensive force while the front row play of Jen Butler continued to make an impact. This much improved squad has taken great strides thus far but consistency will be the test of this young JV team. |
