Week One.
Summit 20 – Morristown 6. The Summit C team opened the 2007 season with a decisive 20-6 win on the road vs. a new Morristown Wildcats team. Summit started the game on defense and was dominating behind strong tackling by Robby Walsh & Corbin Davis and highlighted by Mac Quinn’s fumble recovery. Summit’s potent offense then took charge and forged down the field with HB Andrew Masterfano ultimately busting open a counter for a 10-yard touchdown.  Masterfano then converted the PAT to take a 7-0 lead.  After another stifling defensive stand highlighted by Brian Hadley’s sack and Jake Paytas’s fumble recovery, QB Kyle Waldron guided the offense into the end zone capped by his 11-yard diving plunge.  Oristanio ran for the PAT and a 14-0 lead. Again Summit’s defense forced another turn over with Sam Bebout’s fumble recovery. With little time left in the half Summit’s offense, led my linemen Jimmy Gonnella, Tommy Lenz, Matt Fischetti, Matt Sajer, Tyler MacDonald and Ryan Sweeney along with a great reception by TE JJ Donini, Masterfano ran a 5 yard sweep for a 20-0 halftime lead. Morristown scored early in the 3rd quarter to make the score 20-6.  Matt Opplinger ran 35 yards across field to save another long Morristown run that would have helped them close the gap.  Next up for the Summit C Team: home vs. Westfield at Metro Homes Field on Sunday September 16th at 3:00.

LOSS. Summit 0 – Cranford 13.
Summit, NJ, Sun. Sept. 23, 2007 - The Summit C team battled in a defensive struggle all day against a very physical Cranford team. After an opening 4 and out offensive series Cranford marched the ball down the field 60 yards to cap a quarter long drive. The second quarter did not start out any better with Summit throwing an interception that was returned to their own 30-yard line. Summit’s defense held strong and kept Cranford out of the end zone culminating in a fierce goal line stand led by Robby Walsh, Corbin Davis, Matt Sajer, Robert Haley, Matt Opplinger, Brian Hadley and Skyler Schlesinger. After two more 4 and out series the half ended with Cranford ahead 7 – 0. Cranford started the third quarter with the ball and marched down to Summit’s 39 yard line before they took a 5 yard pass into the end zone for a 13 – 0 lead.  Summit displayed some offensive brilliance in the 4th quarter as QB Kyle Waldron threw a 15-yard pass to TE JJ Donini that he ripped out of 2 defenders hands. The backfield of Andrew Masterfano, Matt Oristanio and Colum Dougherty ran and blocked well moving the ball down the field until a fumble gave the ball back to Cranford. Next Sunday’s game against Berkeley Heights is being rescheduled due to the 6th grade Stokes trip.

Scoring Summary:

C– Cranford, 3 yd run, (PAT, Pass good) Summit 0 – Cranford 7.

Summit, NJ, Wed. Oct. 3, 2007 - The Summit C team met the Berkeley Heights Highlanders on a Wednesday night to play the rescheduled game from the Stokes weekend. The Highlanders started on offense first and came out in a very unusual “tight-splits” offense.  It only took 5 plays for Berkeley Heights to drive the ball into the end zone against a confused Summit defense.  On the ensuing drive the Hilltoppers threw an interception that gave the ball right back to BH in great field possession. On their first play BH converted a 35-yard off tackle for 6 more point.  After a successful PAT attempt BH took a commanding 13-0 lead. A determined Hilltopper offense then took possession and with strong running by Andrew Masterfano and Denzel Norris, QB Kyle Waldron took a 4-yard bootleg in for our only score.  BH did get the ball right back and drove the ball 45 yards on their first few plays before taking a 20 yard off tackle into the end zone for the 20-6 lead.  Summit halftime was spent strategizing on how to stop BH’s unconventional offense. After making a few adjustments the Hilltopper defense stopped the Highlanders for the remaining game but the offense just couldn’t manage to get into the Red Zone.  Highlighting the defense in the 2nd quarter was a fumble recovery by Josh Veloso and a 4th down bruising tackle by Michael Facchinei.  Next Sunday’s game will be in Westfield against the Blue Devils.

Scoring Summary:
1st Quarter
BH– 10 yd run, (PAT, failed) Summit 0 – Berkeley Heights 6.
2nd Quarter
BH- 35 yd run, (PAT, good) Summit 0 – Berkeley Heights 13.
S- Kyle Waldron 4 yd run (PAT, failed) Summit 6 – Berkeley Heights 13.
BH- 20 yd run (PAT, good) Summit 6 – Berkeley Heights 20.

Westfield, NJ, Sun. Oct. 7, 2007 - The Summit C team met a very stubborn Blue Devil team on a beautiful fall day in Westfield. Summit started out on defense and showed some strong hits and tackles by DT Matt Fischetti, HBs Brian Feeney and Louis Richman.  The Hilltoppers than went 4 and out to give the ball immediately back to Westfield.  After a few more solid defensive plays, LB Robert Haley was able to force a fumble to give the ball back to Summit to start the 2nd quarter. With the ball at the 51 yard line QB Kyle Waldron took a broken play the distance for 6.  Summit failed to convert the PAT but showed that they came to play. Summit forced Westfield to a 4 and out series highlighted with a great tackle by DE Charlie Terry. With 27 seconds left in the half, the Hilltoppers went for a 4th and 11 conversion to not only come up short but to fumble the ball in Westfield territory.  With 17 seconds left Westfield threw a 10 yard pass that was clearly going in for a TD when SS Denzel Norris came from nowhere to save the TD and secure Summit a 6-0 halftime lead. The battle continued throughout the 3rd quarter with 2 alternating series of 4 and out play.  Another Terry sack as well as great tackles by LB Josh Veloso and DT Will Delaney led Summit’s defense. Westfield had the ball in their territory when their HB took a sweep right, led by great blocking, 54 yards into Summit’s end zone.  On their PAT attempt, going for the lead, DE Brian Hadley stripped the ball from the runner and saving a game-leading attempt. The 4th quarter continued as a defensive battle with highlighted tackles by DTs Bobby Moreno and Matt Fischetti and a fumble recovery by Brian Hadley.  The game then ended in a stalemate with Summit’s record now 2-2-1.

Scoring Summary:
1st Quarter
S- Kyle Waldron 51 yd run (PAT, failed) Summit 6 – Westfield 0.
3rd Quarter W- 54 yd run (PAT, failed) Summit 6 – Westfield 6.

Summit, NJ, Sun. Oct. 14, 2007 - The Summit C team faced a very strong New Providence Hawks team on a day made for football.  Starting with the ball Summit’s offence couldn’t produce so they were forced to punt. After a bad punt and a worse bounce NP took over on Summit’s 35 yard line.  It didn’t take long for NP to take a sweep left in for the games first points.  Again the Summit offense went 4 and out. DE Matt Opplinger stripped the ball from NP to give the ball immediately back to the Hilltoppers. Summit then produced one of their best drives of the year with 2 great receptions by TE JJ Donini, strong running by RB Andrew Masterfano,  HB Denzel Norris took a counter 5 yards for a TD.  Norris again took the PAT over tackle for the extra point and 7-6 halftime lead.  The offensive line of Jim Gonnella, Matt Sajer, Brian Hadley, Tom Lenz & Matt Fischetti deserve a lot of credit with giving QB Kyle Waldron all the time in the world to make outstanding passes as well as blasting open wide holes for the back to run through.  Starting the 3rd quarter DT Max Quinn highlighted the next defensive stand that unfortunately turned into a 68-yard NP sweep which led to a game leading 12 – 7 lead.  Summit’s offense never cam out from halftime as they went 4 and out.  NP the took the ball into Summit’s endzone for their final score of the day and a 18-7 lead.  Summit’s 3rd quarter defense was lead by some great team play highlighted by tackles from LBs Josh Veloso, John Kenny & Skyler Schlesinger as well as by NT Chris Pohl and DE Colin Geibel.  The 4th quarter was not a strong showing by either team’s offense but Summit’s defense dominated behind solo tackles by DE Bobby Moreno, SS Conner Murphy, LB Sam Bebout and a fumble recovery by DE Brian HadleySummit now takes their 2-3-1 record on the road to Parsippany for a 5:00 Saturday night game.
