Morristown, NJ, Sun. Sept. 9, 2007The Summit 'A' Team opened up the 2007 campaign with an overwhelming win over league newcomer the Morristown Wildcats.  The Wildcats were overmatched from the opening possession when the Hilltoppers recorded their first of numerous 3 and outs they would record on the day.  After a Morristown punt Summit got on the board when Tommy Celmer went 48 yards for a TD on the Hilltoppers very first offensive play of the year.  However the PAT failed, but the Hilltoppers had an early  lead. After another quick series by the Wildcats the ensuing punt was blocked which led to Celmer's second TD of the day on a 9 yard run.  This time Johnny Shaffer made the PAT and the Hilltoppers had a 14 - 0 lead.  On the next Summit possession Johnny Shaffer hit Andrew Miller for 55 yard TD pass, although the kick failed the Hilltoppers had a 20 - 0 lead.  The next Summit possession was capped by a 12 yard TD run by David Kalin and when Shaffer hit the PAT the Hilltoppers went to the half with a 28 - 0 lead.

In the second half the Hilltoppers were more than happy to sit on their lead and leave it up to their defense, although they did manage to get on the board when Philip Jefferson broke off a 59 yard TD run. The kick was blocked, but the Hilltoppers were on top 34 - 0.  The final tally on the day went to Thomas Lackayewho entertained the faithful with his old school running style of using a bruising stiff arm and also managed to amuse his teammates with stories of past TD glories.  With Lackaye's run and Shaffer's successful kick the scoring was complete on 42 - 0 Hilltopper win.  Next up for the Hilltoppers will be Springfield at home (Tatlock Field) on Sunday, September 16th at 1:30pm.

Facing another over-matched opponent in the Springfield Minutemen the Summit A-Team put together a dominating first half and left no doubts about the games outcome.  On the Hilltoppers opening drive after a big run FB Tommy Celmer and a long completion down the left sideline to WR Luke Stephens it was HB David Kalin who capped the drive with a 7 yard TD run.  Johnny Shaffer’s XP hit the left upright and was no good, but the Hilltoppers had a 6 - 0 lead.  After a dominating 3 and out defensive series by Summit , the ensuing punt was blocked by LB Ben Ballintyn who also managed to ‘scoop and score’ a TD with the loose football.  Shaffer this time made the kick and the Hilltoppers had a 14 - 0 lead, which is how the 1st qtr ended.  The start of the 2nd qtr and the next offensive series was no different than the first for the Minutemen and the Hilltoppers defense, which was led by Ballintyn, LB Ryan Bringewatt, SS Matt Miller, DT Stefano Stadlinger, DT Kyle Codey and DE Geron Crawford who were dominating all day and had numerous tackles for loss.  HB David Kalin capped the next drive with a 47 yard TD run and after Shaffer hit the XP the Hilltoppers had a 22 - 0 lead.  Another 3 and out by the Minutemen led to another punt, and after QB Johnny Shaffer hit TE Will Weber on a nice seam route down the middle the drive was capped on a QB sneak by Shaffer and after he hit the XP the Hilltoppers went to the half with a 30 - 0 lead.
The second half pretty much the same story as last week for the Hilltoppers when they were more than happy to sit on their lead and let the defense continue to stymie the Minutemen offense.  The second half was highlighted by some drive killing defensive plays by entire defense with one drive killer with an interception by CB Alex Helfer.  Summit ’s offense pretty much went into clock killing mode and FB Thomas Lackaye and HB Philip Jefferson handled the duties with Jefferson getting the lone score of the second half on a 17 yard TD run after another Minutemen punt was returned nicely by Andrew Miller deep into Minutemen territory.  After Shaffer hit the XP the scoring was complete on another Hilltopper win 38 - 0.  Next up for the Hilltoppers is Cranford at Tatlock, 3pm Sunday. *Please Note the time change.

The Summit A-Team was finally put to a test when the Cranford Cougars came calling.  The Hilltoppers started the game with one of their usual 3 and out series, but after a roughing the kicker penalty the Cougars maintained posession and drove down to the Summit 15 where the drive finally stalled out.  The Hilltoppers took posession and went right to work when QB Johnny Shaffer hit WR Michael Nitzberg on a crossing route in which he took a big hit, but managed to hang on, however the 1st qtr ended 0 - 0

The Hilltoppers got the second quarter started quickly as HB David Kalin broke off a 38 yard TD run.  The XP was missed and the score remained 6 - 0.  The Cougars next drive ended when Summit forced a fumble that was recovered LB Ryan Bringewatt.  The Hilltoppers then wasted no time in capitalizing when on the 1st play after the turnover QB Johnny Shaffer hit WR Luke Stephens down the left sideline for a 32 yard TDShaffer made the ensuing point after and the Hilltoppers went to the half with a 14 - 0 lead.

The 3rd qtr ended scoreless and the only scoring threat mounted was by the Hilltoppers, but Shaffer's 32 yard FG attempt sailed just wide right.  The 2nd half was a highlighted by some stellar defensive play and big hits by DE Geron Crawford, T Stefano Stadlinger, T Alex Fiorito and SS Matt Miller.  In the 4th qtr the Cougars mounted a drive of their own and manged to score the first points given up by the Hilltoppers on the season so far.  The XP was missed and Summit's lead remained 14 -  6.  The Hilltoppers answered with a score of their own when Johnny Shaffer connected on a 25 yard FG and pushed the lead to 17 - 6.  Cranford tried to answer back late, but FS Andrew Miller thwarted the effort with an interception and put the final touches on another Hilltopper win 17 - 6.  Next up the Hilltoppers step out of League Play and take on the Montclair Cobra's at Tatlock on Thursday at 5:30pm

In an unusual weekday game the Hilltoppers stepped ot of league play to line up against the Montclair Cobra's.  The game turned out to be very physical from the start and after the Summit forced a punt on the first Cobra series the Hilltoppers took over, but failed to capitalize as QB Johnny Shaffer threw a pic on the second play from scrimmage.  However it did not hurt the Hilltoppers as DT Hany Castaneda who was a defensive monster all day forced a fumble that was receovered by LB Ben Ballintyn.  Summit wasted no time when on the 1st play QB Johnny Shaffer hit WR Michael Nitzberg with a 42 yard TD pass to give the Hilltoppers a 6 - 0 lead, which is where it stayed as the kick failed.  In the 2nd qtr the Hilltoppers got on the board again, when after a great leaping, interception saving grab by WR Andrew Miller put the ball at the 7 yard line QB Johnny Shaffer hit TE Will Weber for a 7 yard TD pass.  The ensuing kick was missed and the score remained 12 - 0.  The Hilltoppers defense held tight until the Cobra's managed to complete a long TD pass over two Hilltopper defenders which put the score at 12 - 6 to close the half.  The 3rd qtr produced a defensive struggle and standout plays by the entire defense, but along with DT Hany Casteneda's dominant play there were big plays turned in by DE Geron Crawford, DT Alex Fiorito and DT Stefano Stadlinger who all recorded sacks and Stadlinger added a fumble recovery as well.  The struggle continued in the 4th qtr until QB Johnny Shaffer broke a 32 yard TD run.  After a bad snap the XP was never attempted and the score remained 18 - 6, which was the final on another Hilltopper win.  Next up the Hilltoppers will get back into league play on Sunday at home vs Berkley Heights at Tatlock 1:30pm

The Hilltoppers took on a very formidable foe when the Berkeley Heights Highlanders visited Tatlock Field.  After the Highlanders took an early  6 - 0 lead, it seemed to be a wakeup call for the Summit, because the defense stiffened and after a fumble recovery and short return by DE Tyler Reinmund the Hilltoppers answered back when HB David Kalin took a handoff and raced 50 yards for the tying TD.  When Johnny Shaffer connected on the XP the Hilltoppers had an 8 - 6 lead, which is how the 1st qtr ended.  In the 2nd qtr after a great defensive stand in which the Highlanders lost 23 yards on tackles for loss by LB Ben Ballintyn and DT Hany Casteneda  they punted and FS/WR Andrew Miller returned it for a TD.  Unfortunately, because of a penalty it was called back, but that was not the last time on the day that Andrew Miller would be heard from.  After the penalty was marked off and spotted at the 13 yard line QB Johnny Shaffer scored on a keeper around the left end for the TD and when he added the XP the Hilltoppers had a 16 - 6 lead.  On the next Berkley Heights possession, FS Andrew Miller broke in front of a Highlander receiver and intercepted a pass and returned it for a TD, which was aided a huge block decleating the Highlander player by DT Hany CastenedaJohnny Shaffer missed the XP point, but the Hilltoppers had a 22 - 6 lead, which is how the half ended.  The 3rd qtr was scoreless, but was still highlighted by standout defensive plays by LB Ryan Bringewatt in which he recorded numerous tackles for loss and a couple of big hits to stymie the Highlander running game.  Not to be forgotten or outdone by his brother SS Matt ‘Miller Light’ Miller had an interception of his own as well as 2 passes defended.  The 4th qtr was scoreless with the Hilltoppers in their ball control offense until FB Tommy Celmer broke a nice 25 yard TD run and when the XP was blocked the scoring on the day was done at 28 - 6.  The Highlanders put up one last threat and managed to get down to the Hilltopper 8 yard line, but FS Andrew Miller put the finishing touches on his big day and another Summit win with an outstanding diving interception in the endzone.  Next up for the Hilltoppers is match-up with the undefeated Westfield Blue Devils on Sunday at 1:30pm in Westfield at Kehler Field.

The Summit A-Team traveled to Westfield to take on the Westfield Blue Devils in a Divisional crossover game that was a match-up of division leaders and undefeated teams.  The Hilltoppers managed to get on the board first when after a bad snap on the Blue Devil punt attempt the Hilltoppers took possession drove 40 yards behind the running of FB Tommy Celmer and QB Johnny Shaffer.  The final 6 yards was covered when Shaffer hit WR Andrew Miller with a TD pass.  On the final play of the 1st qtr the XP attempt was blocked and the Hilltopper lead stayed at 6 - 0. The 2nd qtr was scoreless thanks to some timely defensive plays by Andrew and Matt MillerAndrew had an interception and Matt had a fumble recovery when after a long gain by the Westfield ball carrier he was stripped of the ball by Andrew and the half ended at 6 - 0

In the 3rd qtr the Blue Devils managed to get on th board, but the Hilltopper D stepped up to block the extra point and the score remained 6 - 6.  Summit tried to answer back and drove the length of the field, but Shaffer never got to kick the ball as the snap sailed over the head of the holder.  In the 4th qtr The Hilltoppers again drove the length of the field again lead by some tough running by FB Tommy Celmer and a long pass from Shaffer to TE Will Weber.  However the drive stalled and when Summit attempted a FG it was the Blue Devils D's turn to step up and block the kick.  With time running out and the Blue Devils trying to make a move SS Matt Miller intercepted a pass at the 20 yard line and return it for a TD, that was aided by a nice block by  DT Hany CastenedaShaffer hit the XP and the Hilltoppers had a 14 - 6 lead, which was the final on another Hilltopper victory.  Next up for the Hilltoppers is an old school match-up with long time rival New Providence on Sunday at 1:30pm at Tatlock.

The Summit A-Team continued their winning ways when the New Providence Hawks visited Tatlock Field..  The Hawks went to the offensive first, but after fake punt continued their drive it was finally stalled out.  The Hilltopper took possession deep in the own territory and after a 6 yard gain by FB Tommy Celmer on their first play from scrimmage they went to air on the next play and QB Johnny Shaffer hit HB David Kalin with an 80 yard TD pass.  Shaffer made the ensuing XP and the Hilltoppers were up 8 - 0.  After another stop by the defense with some nice plays by LB Ben Ballintyn, DT Stefano Stadlinger and DT Hany Casteneda the Hilltoppers took over even deeper in their own territory at the 8 yard line after a long New Providence punt.  As the 2nd qtr began the Hilltoppers were still moving the ball when Shaffer on the option took off on a 54 yard run, but was tripped up at the last minute and brought down on the 1.  On the next play Shaffer was able to provide the TD on a 1 yard run and convert the ensuing XP for a 16 - 0 lead.  The Hilltoppers did manage another drive before the half ended, but Shaffer's 35 yard FG try hit the upright.  The 3rd qtr was highlighted by some nice pass completions to WR Luke Stephens, WR Michael Nitzberg and TE Will Weber, but was capped with the lone TD being scored by FB Tommy Celmer on a 7 yard run.  The XP was blocked and the score remained 22 - 0.  Defensively in the 3rd qtr there were some solid tackles by LB Ryan Bringewatt, CB Thomas Lackaye and DE Kyle Cody as well an an interception by FS Andrew Miller.  The Hawks could not mount much of anything on the day and the Hilltoppers kept rolling along.  They had a drive that ended in no points, when Shaffer had a 32 yard FG blocked, but after the Hawks moved the ball out to midfield LB Ryan Bringewatt stepped in front of a receiver and intercepted a pass to set up the final Hilltopper score of the day, when HB Phillip Jefferson broke off a 53 yard TD run.  When the XP was blocked the scoring on the day was complete on another Hilltopper win 28 - 0.  Next up the Hilltoppers travel to Parsippany for a Saturday night match-up at 8pm.

The 3rd qtr was highlighted by some more defensive gems when SS David Kalin making his first defensive start of the year came up with numerous tackles for loss.  CB Scott Meagher who was flagged for a VERY questionable interference call in the first half played outstanding pass defense throughout the game.  The Hilltoppers only score of the qtr and half came on nice drive after Parsippany was forced to punt.  Shaffer connected twice with TE Will Weber to get the ball deep into Parsippany territory and from there he managed to carry it the final 7 yards for the TDShaffer converted the extra point and the Hilltoppers had a 24 - 0 lead.  Parsippany did manage to get on the board in the 4th qtr, but was unable to convert the extra point and scoring was done on another Hilltopper win 24 - 6.  Next up, the Hilltoppers close out the regular season against the Chatham Cougars HOME at Tatlock Field 1:30pm Sunday.

In what turned out to be a really sloppy game the Chatham Cougars visited Summit’s Tatlock Field.  Despite spending the majority of the day in Cougar territory the Hilltoppers offense, which was hurt by 6 turnovers could not manage any points on the day.  The game was left in the hands of the Hilltopper defense, which stepped up big time and dominated the Cougars offense.  The defensive charge was lead by the D Line of NG Stefano Stadlinger, DT’s Hany Casteneda and Alex Fiorito who were all hard hitting presences throughout the day along with DE’s Kyle Cody and Tyler Reinmund.  The D line got some great spot duty from Philip Jefferson at a number of positions.  The LB duo of Ryan Bringewatt and Ben Ballintyn made there presence felt as well, with big hits and tackles for loss.  The Hilltopper DB’s made the most noise on the day as CB’s Thomas Lackaye and Alex Helfer  played great pass defense throughout the day as did FS Andrew Miller who had 2 interceptions to kill Cougar drives.  The biggest play of the day came from one of the smallest, but most effective players; when throwing out of their own end zone the Cougars tried a screen pass that SS Matt ‘Miller Light’ Miller dove in front of to intercept for a Hilltopper TDJohnny Shaffer connected on the XP and the Hilltoppers had an 8 - 0 lead.  The only real Chatham scoring threat on the day came on a fumble recovery when a Cougar defender scooped up the ball and was on his way to a TD when QB Johnny Shaffer made a great effort to run him down and prevent the score.  That drive was subsequently killed with FS Andrew Miller’s 2nd INT on the day.  The Hilltoppers killed the remaining time on the clock and put the wraps on another win and the regular season.  Next up the Hilltoppers step out of league play and travel to Union to play their Annual Game with the Farmers at 5pm on Thursday Nov 1st.  After a bye week the Hilltoppers get back into league play with a 2nd round playoff game on Sunday November 11th, against the winner of this Sunday’s game between the Cranford Cougars and the Berkeley Heights Highlanders.

The Summit A Team wrapped up it's complete regular season schedule with an 8-0 win over the Union Farmers.  In what was a tight defensive battle the first half Summit recorded a safety in the 2nd qtr and held a 2-0 lead at the half.  The defense charge was lead by LB Ryan Bringewatt, DT Stefano Stadlinger and SS Matt Miller.  On the offensive side of the ball the ball carrying duties were left up Phil Jefferson, who stepped in nicely for the injured David Kalin and Thomas Lackaye.  The lone TD scored in the game was a 7 yrd TD pass from QB Johnny Shaffer to TE Will Weber.  The XP was missed and the scoring was complete on another Hilltopper win at 8-0.  After a bye week the Hilltoppers get into playoff action next Sunday as they take on the winner of the Cranford vs Berkeley Heights game on Sunday November 11th (Time TBD).

The Summit A-Team took on the Berkley Heights Highlanders in a match-up that would decide the Suburban Youth Football League National Division Championship.  After an outstanding defensive stand by the Hilltoppers on the first Highlander drive the Hilltoppers took over and on their first offensive series scored on a nice 7 play 55 yard TD drive with QB Johnny Shaffer covering the final 21 with a run.  The XP was good and the Hilltoppers had an 8-0 lead, which was the way the 1st qtr ended.  In the 2nd qtr the Hilltoppers struck again and after a short gain on a pass from Shaffer to TE Will Weber the Hilltoppers attacked deep as Shaffer hit WR Luke Stephens with a great ball down the right sideline for a 56 yard TD pass.  Shaffer converted the XP and the Hilltoppers went to the half with a 16-0 lead.  In the second half a Hilltopper fumble turned into a Highlander TD when they pulled off a HB pass for a TD.  The XP was made and the Hilltopper lead was 16-8.  With the score tightening up it was time for the entire defense to step up and although highlighted by some great individuals efforts.  None was better than Stefano Stadlinger, who was seeing his first action on the season at LB in the Hilltoppers newly unveiled 4-3 defense.  Stadlinger seemed to like his new spot and lead the charge all day for an aggressive Hilltopper run defense.  Although, as well as he played he was not a one man show.  LB Ben Ballintyn, DT Hany Casteneda and DE Tyler Reinmund spent a lot of time in the Highlander backfield.  The key element in stopping the Highlanders is stopping Andrew Romeo.  The Hilltoppers employed SS Matt 'Miller Light' Miller as the spy to follow the Highlander back where ever he went.  The proof in how well this worked was when the Highlanders in desperation mode trying to get the tying score tried to split their big back out and get him deep.  Miller in man to man coverage inside the Summit 3 deep zone scheme intercepted the ball and put the wraps on another Hilltopper win and a birth in the Super Bowl of the Suburban Youth Football League, against a familiar foe in the Westfield Blue Devils this Sunday at 12:30pm in Perth Amboy.
