Summit traveled to Cranford to take on the number 3 seed Johnson Crusaders tonight, and had most of the crowd buzzing as they clawed their way to an 11-11 first quarter draw. Summit had gotten Johnson’s center into foul trouble and had clearly tired them out running the court. After some nice baskets by Jamie Osmulski, Shannon Murphy and Melissa Scott, Alex Reid hit two foul shots to end the quarter tied. Johnson answered with a zone defense, and the change gave them rest and frustrated the cold shooting Hilltoppers, who hit only 3 baskets in the next two quarters. But Emily Cristaldi and Shannon Murphy picked up their game offensively, scoring 7 and 6 points apiece in the fourth to bring the Hilltoppers close. When Alex Reid drew an offensive foul midway in the fourth quarter, the ladies had a chance to get the deficit to three. But a key turnover and a drive and put back by Johnson sealed their victory. Johnson was way too tough on the boards for Summit, who gave up too many follow up layups which kept the Hilltoppers at bay.
