Kenny Miller was the starting pitcher and was doing fine until the 3rd inning when the Summit defense had a collapse. Before it was over Summit had made 3 errors and Johnson had almost batted around, netting 4 unearned runs. The following inning was even worse. Two key errors allowed Johnson to pick up 6 more unearned runs. In the middle of the mess Tom Casey came on in relief of Miller. Casey eventually ended the inning and then pitched two nice final innings.

Summit also benefitted from some sloppy play by Johnson to score 3 runs and take a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the 3rd. The 10 unearned runs in the 3rd and 4th innings put Summit into an 11-3 hole. Summit rallied for a run in the 5th on two walks, a single by Tim Cotter and an infield ground ball that scored Tim Spangler. In the top of the 6th Tim Kane led off with a single and the Johnson reliever walked Matt Dewald and Tom Casey to load the bases with no outs. After an out, Spangler was walked to force in a run. Tim Cotter singled to score DeWald, Miller drove in Casey on a fielders choice. Nick Oristanio singled to bring Spangler in and Summit had closed the gap to 11-8. But that was the end of it.

In the first two innings Summit had some great scoring opportunities but came up dry. In the 1st inning Summit loaded the bases with one out (Mat Rea and Tim Spangler singled and Evan Chang was hit by the pitcher) but failed to score. Again in the second Summit put runners at 2nd and third when Oristanio doubled and Ben Roessle singled with only one, but again Summit came up empty.
