Summit easily handled St. Patricks in the preliminary Round of the Union County Tournament. As a result, Summit will play Westfield (the 2nd seed) on Saturday at Westfield. Kenny Miller was the starting pitcher went six innings giving up only 2 runs on 6 hits and striking out 10. Tom Casey pitched the 7th inning and did his usual effective job allowing no runs and striking out 2 batters.
Miller scored in the 1st inning when he was safe on a error and later scored when Tim Spangler doubled. St. Patricks temporarily tied the game in the 2nd. After one out Miller ran into bad patch and gave up 3 walks and hit a batter. Miller eliminated any concern by striking out the next batter and ending the threat with a 4-3 out. From there on Miller remained in control of the game.
Summit added 3 runs in second. Tim Cotter got thins started with a single, Matt Rea tripled to score Cotter. A single by Miller, a walk to Hagan and another double by Spangler made the score 4-1. Two more runs were added in the 3rd. Ben Roessle and Rea both doubled and Miller added a single. Summit's final 3 runs came in the 5th inning. Tim Kane drew a one out walk, Miller singled, Chang walked, Spangler was safe on an error and Nick Orestanio singled.
