Summit took the opening kickoff and clearly announced their strategy. In this first series Summit almost exclusive employed 5 wide receivers and single back. Joe Jaskolski concentrated exclusively on short passes and completed 9 of 10 attempts. Intermixed with the passes were two rushing plays. One, a fine 20 yd. run by Dwayne Dabney. The drive ended when a 4th down pass fell 2 yds short of making a first down at the Mendham 15 yard line. Overall, Summit threw 33 passes and ran the ball 6 times. Summit battled Mendham to a scoreless 1st half. However, Mendham began to dominate play during the remainder of the half. Two Mendham turnovers aided the Summit defense.

Mendham came out in the 2nd half determined to run the ball. They did it effectively, gaining 204 yard on the ground in the final two quarters. At the same time Mendham shut down Summit, allowing Summit only one first down in the second half.
