Summit pulled off a terrific victory over Chatham in the final regular season basketball game with the Cougars before the Iron Hills conference passes into oblivion. The Hilltoppers came out playing a very tight zone defense that completely stifled Chatham in the first half. Who would have thought that Summit would hold Chatham to 2 points in the 1st quarter and 5 points in the 2nd quarter. The Summit offense was deliberate but chalked up 18 points from Jordan Healy (7 points), David Newton (6 points) and Andre Torres (5 points). That allowed Summit to go to the break up by 11 points. Big leads at halftime can easily disappear in the 2nd half, so the Summit faithful were excited but apprehensive.
James Kennedy stepped up in the 3rd quarter and scored half of Summit's 8 points on a pair of nice drives to the hoop. At the same time the Summit defense kept a tight lid on the Chatham offense. The 4th quarter opened with Summit holding a 10 point lead. A free throw by Healy and another FG by Kennedy made the lead 13. For the rest of the quarter Summit's scoring was primarily from the foul line. Even though Summit only hit on 9 of their 17 attempts it was enough so that the defense could prevent Chatham from getting closer than 10 points.
All of Summit's scoring was concentrated in four players; Newton (13 pts.), Healy (10 pts.), Torres (9 pts.) and Kennedy (8 pts).
