If you failed to travel to Washington Carver Middle School for the Weequahic game you missed one of the most electrifying games in Summit history. Summit was down by two at the half, but actually would have been ahead except for Weequahic 3-pointers at the buzzer in both the 1st and 2nd quarters. The Summit fans were excited as the 2nd half began, but Weequahic put on one of their patented run and gun fast break quarters that found Summit down by 9 and seemingly headed toward a rout, but it was not to be so!
David Newton got things started with with four quick points, Jordan Healy scored a trey, Kendall Baker added an FG and Newton dropped a pair of free throws, all the time holding Weequahic to a single free throw. Suddenly, with 4 minutes left, Summit was on top 51-50. Unbelievable!! Summit answered a Weequahic FG with free throws by Baker and Kendall plus a 3-pointer by Andre Torres. So with 1:40 left Summit had out scored the Indians 16-3 and had a 56-52 lead. A pair of free throws by Healy was answered by 3 points from Weequahic. Now the clock showed 29.0 seconds. Another pair of free throws by Healy made it a 4 point lead at the 22 second mark. Weequahic answered with two free throws that were matched by Baker, now 63-59. Unfortunately, Summit was called for a foul on a 3-point attempt and The Indian's ace drained all three. The last minute seemed to taking an eternity. With 13 seconds left Baker added another free throw to put Summit up by 2. Another buzzer beating FG by Weequahic knotted the score and the game went to overtime.
Weequahic scored first and Healy tied it up with a field goal. Weequahic scored again but two free throws by Baker tied things at 68-68. Healy was fouled and drained them both, his 5th and 6th consecutive free throws. With only 3.5 seconds left Weequahic inbounded the ball and drove down court. It was helter-skelter when the horn sounded, but a whistle blew just as the game ended. It was a 2-shot foul against Summit and the score was 70-68. The shooter drained the first. Were we headed to double overtime? The second shot rolled around the rim and fell out. Summit had beaten Weequahic in their undersized court that is their secret weapon. Fans went scurrying to the archives believing this may be the first time Summit has beaten Weequahic on their home gym. What an afternoon!
Jordan Healy led all Summit scorers with19 points, but 3 other player scored in double digits; Baker (16), Newton (12) and Torres (11). Healy was also awesome on defense pulling down 11 rebounds
