The Lady Hilltoppers had a lot going on at the Summit gym Tuesday night. They were responsible for organizing their annual “Hoops for Hope Night” fundraiser for breast cancer awareness. They were displaying their new once a year pink uniforms. And they had the task of trying to derail a Chatham squad that had won 12 in a row and sported a 20-1 record! But for the first 8 minutes you wouldn’t have known that anything fazed the Lady Hilltoppers. Bursting from the gate from the start, which is their trade mark, the Hilltoppers scored 9 unanswered points and took an 11-3 first quarter lead. Cassie Hall led the charge with 4 points, and Jenna Wilson, Alex Reid and Emily Cristaldi also added hoops. But there were ominous signs…both Hall and Kate Martino had been whistled for 2 fouls and had to come out. Chatham’s center had also picked up a foul and when the second quarter began and she stepped in front of Melissa Scott knocking her out of bounds, the Summit faithful screamed for foul number 2. Instead they got a strange no call, and 5 more foul calls against Summit in the quarter, sending Chatham’s 90% foul shooting center to the line. The result? The highest point total Summit allowed all year and a 23-18 deficit at half time that they could not recover from. Everyone played hard but Chatham’s significant size advantage prevented any open looks from the outside, holding Cristaldi to only 11 points, her lowest total of the month.  Cassie Hall had a solid game with 9 points and 5 rebounds. The game ended on a bright note though. The girls program raised over $4,000 that night for charity in a job well done.
