As Summit entered the gym at Roselle Catholic, it didn’t have the feel of a neutral court, as Summit was playing only their second game against a Union County foe all year. But Summit took their Iron Hills Conference honed game directly to the number 2 seeded Plainfield Cardinals, and gave them everything they could handle. Combining a suffocating zone defense, drawing fouls against their center, using penetrating drives by Jenna Wilson, and the continued hot hand of Emily Cristaldi, who is having an amazing February, Summit took a 31-23 lead into the fourth quarter. And when Plainfield came out pressing in the fourth, Summit matched them shot for shot for the first 3 minutes of the quarter. At 36-28, many Plainfield fans had written their team off. Plainfield was having trouble getting a shot off, and in desperation they threw up a long three from close to the bench, and it fell, and they got a foul called on the play. Their 4 point play breathed new life into the cardinals, and shook Summit badly. And that was really it. Summit committed some uncharacteristic turnovers, couldn’t get a whistle, and Plainfield scored 13 more unanswered points for a heartbreaking 45-36 loss.
