The Summit Lady Hilltoppers played a terrific game against a well coached Somerville squad in a Quarterfinal Group III game, and despite playing great basketball came out on the short end of a 52-44 score. The first half was very typical of a Summit game this season. The girls raced to an 11-7 first quarter lead, out hustling Somerville and getting scoring from their starters, including a signature 3-pointer from Emily Cristaldi.  Somerville came out in the second quarter and got  free inside after some strong inside screens, and three uncharacteristic turnovers from Summit got Somerville a 23-21 lead. But the third quarter has always been good for Summit, and riding the balanced scoring of Emily Cristaldi, Alex Reid and Jenna Wilson, Summit tied it up going into the fourth quarter.

Tonight however, it was not meant to be. Summit started out 0-5 in the quarter, and a basket from Somerville and 2 free throws from Cassie Hall, who had 10 boards and 3 blocks in a fine all around game, kept the score tied. A long three from Somerville, who hit more than 50% from the 3 point arc, and a free throw, gave them a 4 point lead. Somerville went into a stall, but Alex Reid picked off a pass and drove in for a lay-up to bring the Lady Hilltoppers to 45-43 with 2 minutes left. But two hard drives to the basket from Summit did not get a call, and Summit was then whistled for numerous fouls, sending Somerville to the line, where they scored the rest of their points. Summit outscored Somerville 14-9 in field goals, but got killed from the foul line, 16-7, and with Somerville dropping in 6 bombs, it was all she wrote for a great Lady Hilltopper season.

Kate Martino scored a tough 6 points and had 4 boards, Jenna Wilson had a solid all round game with 6 points, 4 boards and 5 assists, Alex Reid played her usual all around game with 12 points, 7 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals, and Emily Cristaldi, dropped in 12 points, capping a prolific scoring year with a per game average of 14.7 points.

The girl’s team this year got the most from every single player they could, and far exceeded preseason expectations. You couldn’t ask for a better year.
