The Summit fans were jarred from their comfort zone when Cranford (who entered the game with only one victory and four losses) took the opening kickoff and marched 84 yards in 17 plays to take a 7-0 lead. The drive was actually 104 yards since Cranford had to overcome 20 yards of penalties during the drive. The drive consumed 10:32 of the quarter and Summit appeared to be incapable of stopping the Cranford running game. However, looks can be deceiving. The Summit defense made some adjustments and limited Cranford to 52 yards rushing for the next 3 quarters.

On the ensuing on-side kickoff Summit took over on its 40 yard line Dwaine Dabney gained 6 yards and then Matt Rea raced 54 yards to score. Alex Melendez kicked the first of his 6 extra point and the score was tied. Melendez has now kicked 39 consecutive extra points. On Summit's next possession the Hilltoppers mounted an 80 yard (9 play) scoring drive. The drive started with a 23 yard pass to Shawn Hillas, included a 22 yard pass to Rea, with the final 15 yard covered by Dabney. Summit got the ball back on Cranford's 40 after a weak punt and quickly drove for a score. Three passes highlighted the drive; 21 yards to Dabney, 10 yards to Marcel Godino and a 15 yard TD strike to Rea. The half ended with Summit on top 21-7

The 2nd half began with another Cranford on side kick that allowed Summit to start from their 42 yard line. Eleven plays later Rea took it in from the 2 yard line. Summit added two quick scores at the end of the 3rd quarter. Rea blocked a Cranford punt and Sal Liberato recovered it in the end zone. Cranford was forced to punt again on their next possession and it too was blocked and recovered by Mark DeMetro on Cranford's 13. Dabney scored on the next play.

Pat Huck took over at QB for the 4th quarter and guided Summit to it's final TD. The drive featured runs of 8 and 10 yards by Peter Badgley, a 14 yard carry by Stephen Whitman and a 6 yard TD run by Liberato.
