Summit vs Johnson 9/26/2009 | ||||||||||||||||||

It was widely anticipated that Johnson would be the toughest test of the season. However, Matt Rea got things off to a rousing start by taking a reverse from Dwayne Dabney on the opening kick off and racing 75 yards to score. Alex Melendez kicked the first of six extra points and Summit was up 7-0. On Johnson's second possession their punt went off the side of the foot and Summit was presented with a gift at the Johnson 14. Two plays later Dwaine Dabney scored to make the score 14-0. Summit's next possession started on the the Hilltopper 29 yard line. On the 2nd play Joe Jaskolski hit Marcel Godino for 73 yards down to the Johnson 7 yard line. A penalty moved it to the 3 and Jaskolski ran it in from there. The next Summit possession ended on a fumble turnover on Summit's 35. Four plays later Johnson scored what would be their only points of the game. However, the ease with which they scored made the Hilltopper fans uncomfortable.
The next two Summit possessions also ended in turnovers, both via interceptions. The second gave Johnson the ball on the Summit 26. Two plays later Jake Hall made a great interception to end the threat. Late in the 2nd quarter a weak punt gave Johnson another chance at Summit's 26, but Johnson coughed up the ball at the 21. Dabney advanced the ball to the Summit 46 and then cut through the entire Johnson defense to go 54 yards for a TD. Summit's final score of the 1st half came at the end of the half when Brian Feeney blocked a Johnson punt and Logan Jefferies recovered the ball on the Johnson 24. On the next play Jaskolski connected with Shawn Hillas for a 24 yard TD. The teams went to the locker room with Summit on top 35-7
Johnson took the 2nd half kickoff at their 20 and mounted a strong running effort that moved the ball smartly to the Summit 38, but their attempt to get back into the game ended when Hall intercepted a pass at the Summit 19. For the rest of the game Summit stayed with the running game. They mounted an 11 play 81 yard drive that consumed most of the 3rd quarter and ended when Dabney scored from the 10. That gave Summit a 35 point lead and triggered football's equivalent of a mercy rule, i.e., the game goes to a "running clock." Johnson never again showed any kind of a threat. Pat Huck took over at QB and led Summit to its last TD when Stephen Whitman ran the final 18 yards. At this stage sophomore Ryan Bringewatt came on at QB and guided Summit until the clock ran out.
