Moristown, NJ - The 2009 A Team opened up their season with a battle against the Morristown Wildcats.  The Hilltoppers opened up on defense and immediately set the tone for the day on the very first play with a big hit and tackle for loss by MLB Colm Dougherty.  After a forced 3 and out Summit went on the offensive and after a nice drive that featured runs by QB Charlie Terry and SB Andrew Masterfano the drive was capped with a 10 yard TD pass from Terry to Dougherty the XP was missed and the score was 6-0 Hilltoppers. After another outstanding 3 and out for the Hilltopper D, highlighted by strong plays by OLB Dan Childers Summit took over and managed to get on the board quickly as SB Matt Oristanio took the 1st play after the change of possession 42 yards for the TDSam Bebout made the XP and the Hiltoppers were up 14-0.  The Wildcats did not go away and answered the Summit score with a score of their own; when a tipped pass ended up in the hands of a Morristown player and he took it in for the score.  The 1 point conversion was good and the score was 14-7 Summit.

The Hilltoppers using their 2 platoon backfield system went to QB Matt Oplinger and FB Kyle Waldron who quickly answered the Morristown score when Oplinger broke off a 30 yard TD run of his own.  Bebout connected on the XP and the score was 22-7 Hilltoppers.  Morristown answered with a TD of their own,  but missed the XP and the score remained at 22-13 Hilltoppers.  On this day every time the Wildcats fought back the Hilltoppers answered with a score their own and this time the big play on the 65 yard drive was a 35 yard pass from Terry to Masterfano to set up Terry's 1 yard TD run. Bebout connected again on the XP and the score was 30-13 Hilltoppers.  With little time left in the half and Morristown desperate to get on the board again before the half they went to the air.  However Summit's secondary of Waldron and Tyler Bowlin at the CB spots along with FS Tanner Fulton ended those hopes as Fulton intercepted a Wildcat pass and closed out the half at 30-13 Hilltoppers.

The second half started with Summit having the ball, but the drive stalled and Morristown took over.  However the Wildcats didn't fair any better and the Hilltoppers took over and capitalized when Oplinger scored on a 55 yard TD run, however a miscue on the snap led to the XP not being converted and the score remained 36-13 Hilltoppers.  Morristown managed another score and converted the XP to make it 36-20.  However; the Hilltoppers were not done quite yet as they went to the back on the offensive and went to the ground attack to run some time off the clock.  The backfield set of Terry and Dougherty combined with strong play along the offensive line by C Michael Facchinei, G Eric Lyman, G Matt Sajer, T Robbie Walsh and T Jimmy Gonnella went to work moving the ball steadily on a drive that was capped by a 3 yard run by DoughertyBebout connected on the XP and the score was 44-20 Hilltoppers.  Morristown went to the attack, but was stymied by strong the strong play of the Summit D with big plays by MLB duo of Robert Haley and Oristanio.  The play that finalized the result and put an end to the day for Morristown was Fulton's 2nd INT of the game and the day was complete on a 44-20 Hilltopper win.

Next up for the Hilltoppers on Sunday is the home opener at Tatlock Field against New Providence at 1:30pm

The home opener for the Summit Hilltoppers was a tough defensive battle against the New Providence Hawks.  The 1st qtr was a scoreless battle with both teams not generating very much on offense, which was due to the strong defensive efforts of both teams.  The Hilltopper defense was spearheaded by strong efforts from MLB Colm Dougherty, DT Jimmy Gonnella and DE Robbie Walsh.  However in the 2nd qtr the Hawks put together a scoring drive highlighted by a long pass completion.  The XP was missed and the score remained 6-0 Hawks.  Summit put together a nice drive of it's own to try and answer before the end of the first half although the running efforts of QB Matt Oplinger, FB Kyle Waldron and SB Andrew Masterfano, but came up short as the half ended at 6-0 Hawks.

With the Hilltppers getting the first possession of the 3rd qtr they mounted a 65 yard scoring drive behind a ground game highlighted by the tough inside running of Dougherty and QB Charlie TerryDougherty capped off the drive with a 5 yard TD run to tie the game at 6.  The XP was not converted and the score remained 6-6.  The Summit defense came up with a big stop on the ensuing Hawks drive with nice plays by MLB Robert Haley, CB Tyler Bowlin and FS Tanner Fulton.  As the 4th qtr began Summit then went on the offensive again and looked to be on their way to another scoring drive behind the strong running of both of the Hilltopper QB's (Terry and Oplinger) and Dougherty, but the drive stalled out as they were stopped on 4th and 1 from the 2 yard line.  Summit then forced a Hawks punt, but a miscue gave the ball back to the Hawks at midfield, however the Hilltopper D stood tall and got the ball back for the offense.  With time quickly coming of the clock the Hilltoppers mounted another strong drive and took the lead when Charlie Terry scored on a 1 yard run behind a strong block thrown by Dougherty to give the Hilltoppers the lead at 12-6. The XP was missed and the score remained 12-6 Hilltoppers.  The Hawks  mounted one last effort but the Summit D forced a fumble and closed the book on another Hilltopper win.
