With her playmaking and sharpshooting ability, senior guard Emily Cristaldi has a penchant for taking control of a game. That was never more evident than yesterday, when Cristaldi scored a game-high 20 points, including seven in the first quarter and nine straight to start the third, as Summit rolled to a 41-22 victory over Union. Summit, at 6-0, is off to its best start since it began the 1997-98 campaign 10-0. "It definitely helps with confidence to get off to a fast start," Cristaldi said. "I've been on the other side when its happened to us. If you can help put an opponent away you try to do it." Cristaldi had seven points and Kelly Osmulski added three of her six points as Summit outscored Union, 10-0, in the first quarter.
Union finally got on the board with 6:27 remaining in the second quarter when Janiesha Allen (who transferred from Summit this school year) scored on a layup. Union got as close as 14-9 with three minutes remaining in the half, but Summit closed on a 7-0 run, including four points from Cassie Hall, who finished with four points and 16 rebounds, and along with sophomore Kate Martino (6 rebounds) and Osmulski (5 rebounds) helped to control the boards. Any hope Union had was ended in the third quarter as Cristaldi struck for a 3-pointer in the first minute and then added the next six points to push Summit's lead to 32-9.
"Emily has been in this gym every day from the end of last season until the end of the school year," said Summit coach Brian Erickson. "She's improved. Today, she could've shot 10 more times but opted to pass and look for a teammate." Cristaldi, who will attend Muhlenberg next year, is now averaging 21.2 points per game. (Abstracted from nj.com)
