Summit advanced to the Sectional quarterfinals for the first time in 12 years. It was done behind the fine pitching of Pat Birosak who went all 7 inning allowing only 5 hits and 2 runs. He didn't walk a single batter. The Summit bats stroked 8 hits and 4 runs. To top it off the defense came up with lots of great plays including two crucial double plays. All-in-all it was a game to treasured.

Summit scored a runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th to take a 3-0 lead into the 5th inning. But, Bordentown appeared to be on the verge of a big inning when, after one out, the #8 hitter belted a solo home run. This was followed by 2 consecutive single to put the tieing run on base. However, the first of two double plays put a abrupt stop to the threat. Summit got the run back in the in the bottom of the inning.

In the Bordentown 6th the lead off hitter was hit by a pitch and the next batter doubled to put runners on 2nd and 3rd. The next batter hit a sharp ground ball to Chris George who made a fine stop and threw the batter out, but one run scored and the other runner moved to 3rd with one out. Tension was rising. Jay Crisfield made made a great catch of a pop up in foul territory and that was followed by a remarkable deep stop by Joe Weil at 3rd and a very long throw to 1st that just beat the runner. Now the score was 4-2.

Brodentown came up for their final at bat in the 7th needing 2 runs. The first batter popped up deep and George made a great catch. However, the 2nd batter was safe on an infield error. That brought tieing run to the plate in the form of the #1 hitter. With the count 1-1, he stroked a shot down the 3rd base line. It was gobbled up by Weil, throw to 2nd , on to 1st for a game ending double play.

Summit's run in the 2nd came from back-to-back singles by Birosak and Crisfield and Bordentown's only two errors of the game. One more run in the 3rd resulted from a double by Nick Oristanio (that just missed going over the right field fence) and an RBI single by Ben Roessle. The 4th inning began when Birosak was walked and Crisfield singled. A fine bunt George moved them to 2nd and 3rd. Weil got the RBI on an infield out . Summit's final run got started when Kenny Miller singled, went to 2nd on a infield out, to 3rd on a long fly ball to right, and scored on a Matt Dewald single.

Matawan (16th seed) defeated Middlesex (#1 seed) 5-3 so Summit will play Matawan on Friday at Summit, I believe.
