Summit opened the season against Roselle Catholic at Union County College and ran in to a very strong performance by RC's Kevin Cowan. Cowan scattered four hits over his 5 innings and allowed only one run. The game got off to a good start when lead off hitter Matt Rea ripped a solid single to left off a fastball. Chris George hit another fastball down the right foul line, but the 1st baseman got his glove on it . Kenny Miller made another solid contact on the first pitch, but it was right at the pitcher. So, three solid contacts came up empty for Summit. The bottom of the first had some good defensive news. With one out and a runner on first RC tried to steal 2nd. A great throw by catcher Garrett Lerner easily cut the runner down.

Summit managed its only score in the top of the 2nd. Pat Birosak doubled with one out and pitcher Jay Crisfield follow that with another double to drive in Birosak. Unfortunately Roselle Catholic tied the score in the bottom of the 2nd with a leadoff home run. RC would go on to score 7 more runs over the next three innings.

An unusual play occurred in 3rd inning. With the bases loaded and one out RC's cleanup hitter drove a towering shot to center. Miller raced back to the fence and made a great catch, saving what would have been a grand slam home run. His momentum knocked down the fence and he fell over the fence. Subsequently, Summit doubled off one of the runners who hadn't tagged up. Unfortunately the umpires ruled that Miller was out of the field of play after falling over the fence and they awarded one base to each of the runners.
