Won 2-1 (OT) Playing on a field that made Summit’s ‘keep it on the ground’ game a challenge, Summit came away with a 2-1 OT win. After a scoreless first half, Justin Cyrus scored following a scrum in front of the Rahway net. Shortly thereafter Rahway tied the score on a beautiful 28-yard direct kick and the game proceeded to overtime. Things looked bleak when leading scorer Cyrus was knocked out with a leg injury and Rahway exerting relentless pressure.  At the 8 minute mark Ben Roessle ended the game off a Joe Callahan throw in and the celebration was on. Won 2-1 In the first minute of play Luke Shehata sent a cross that Clayton Johnson headed in to stake Summit to a 1-0 lead. Summit had nice ball control during the most of the half but Lakes was able to score from 20 yards out with about 10 minutes remaining. The second half started similarly to the first but this time Clayton’s pestering of the goalie led to a goal by Luke, this happening during the first minute of play. For the next 25 minutes Summit controlled the midfield. During the final 10 minutes Lakes pushed players forward and created several scoring chances. However, the Hilltopper defense and goalie, Travis Barr, stood the test and Summit emerged with a 2-1 victory and a 5-3 record.(reported by Bill Yager)

Lost 2-0 Summit played their best game of the year against Union County’s #1 team. Cranford scored on a shot off the post midway through the first half and was putting constant pressure on Summit’s defense. After the goal the tide turned and Summit started controlling the midfield lead by Joe Callahan and Peter Laughlin. The halftime score remained 1-0.

The Hilltoppers came out in the second half and continued exerting pressure coming close to scoring twice. Cranford’s first offensive thrust resulted in a goal. Summit continued to push forward and had a couple of more great opportunities but no luck. Cranford had several man advantage break outs with point blank opportunities but the defense led by Tim Yager were up to the task and thwarted the Cougars, keeping the score 2-0 Cranford.(reported by Bill Yager)

6:30PM
Lost 2-1 in OT Summit came out strong, playing good possession soccer during the first half. After Elizabeth scored from 12 yards out, Summit responded on a header by Clayton Johnson on a beautiful cross from Nolan Kasbar to even the halftime score at 1-1. The second half saw the Summit team a step behind for the majority of the half. Only pervasive defense led by the man marking of Terry McKenna and the goalkeeping of Jay Crisfield kept Elizabeth from scoring during the half.

The game went to overtime. During the second minute an Elizabeth cross could not be cleared out of the box and the Minutemen were able to score into an open net from 18 yards out. Game over with Summit suffering a hard fought 2-1 OT loss. (reported by Bill Yager)

Won 3-1 Terry McKenna, Luke Shehata and Eric Vorchheimer were the goal scorers on the rainy inaugural game on Union Catholic’s new turf field. What did the goals share in common? All 3 came as a result of long throw-ins by Joe Callahan. Summit went up early and possessed a 2-0 halftime lead. After a UC goal from a direct kick, Vorchheimer’s goal iced the game for Summit, and iced is the perfect choice of words on this frigid day.

4:00PM
Won 2-1 Westfield visited Summit’s Memorial Field looking to continue its winning way. Summit hung with them during the first half, finishing at a 0-0 tie. Midway through the second half the Westfield Blue Devils broke through, finally connecting on a goal. Jay Crisfield made several of his 13 saves during this time preserving Summit’s chances to score the upset. It continued that way until 11 minutes remained in the game when off a corner kick Stuart Railey scored to tie up the match. With OT looming a long throw in by Joe Callahan was headed around with JP Lucaci’s finally finding the back of the net. Summit held off intense Westfield pressure during the final 4 minutes giving them their most unlikely win of the season.

Railey and Lucaci had spent most of the season sharpening their skills at the JV level. Who would have thought that these players would produce the two goals that sent  Summit to its biggest win of the year since Westfield is a top 20 team in the Ledger’s rankings. (reported by Bill Yager)
