Having lost even bigger leads in the 4th quarter on more than one occasion, the Summit fans were on edge entering the final 8 minutes. In the first 2 minutes Union Catholic cut the lead to 3 points, but a Field Goal by Clayton Johnson put lead back to 5. The turning point of the game came when Cris Cafiero was fouled and a technical foul was called on the Union Catholic bench. Cafiero drained 3 of the 4 shots and Summit suddenly had an 8 point advantage and the ball. In short order Johnson scored and Matt Wholey scored in the paint. Now the lead was 13 points with only 2:30 left. Of course, the fouling by Union Catholic began. In past games Summit's failure to make the free throws down the stretch had cost Summit games. This time David Newton made 7 of 10 4th quarter free throws, including 5 in a row in the final minute and Cafiero 5 of 8, including the three that broke the game open earlier.

Cafiero (14 points), Hillas (13 points), Newton (10 points), and Johnson (10 points) were all in double digits. Matt Wholey was close behind with 8 points. Wholey also had to match up with UC's 6' 9" center and clearly won the battle with 11 rebounds.
