Summit entered this rematch without the services of three key players. Missing were Summit's two leading scorers, Shawn Hillas (11.3 points/game) and David Newton (10.1 points/game), and Summit's leading rebounder Matt Wholey. Needless to say this put us at a great disadvantage and it showed. Summit struggled to a a 17 point deficit at the end of the first half (29-12).
Starting the 2nd half the new chemistry began to work and Summit was able to knock 5 points off the lead. Still the Hilltoppers were down an almost insurmountable 14 points to start the final quarter. To the amazement of all the Summit fans, Summit came roaring out and wiped out that 14 point lead in the first 2 minutes and 42 seconds of the quarter. Matt Rea got the rally rolling with two 3-pointers. Cris Cafiero was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all 3 free throws. After a Dwaine Dabney free throw Clayton Johnson nailed a trey and then added free throw and the score was 48-48. Wow! What a run. Union Catholic took a time out to regroup and slowly rebuilt a 6 point lead at the 1:23 mark and then proceeded to make their free throws to win.
Summit, on more than one occasion, has lost games because they hadn't been able to make their free throws. Well tonight it was a different story. Summit connected on 23 of 29 free throws. In the final half drive Cafiero netted 10 consecutive foul shots.
Rea came off the bench to lead all Summit scorers with 16 points, hitting 4 of his 5 3-point tries. Cafiero (15 points) and Johnson (12 points) were also in double digits. Ryan O'Malley, who had to carry the load at Center, led the rebounding with 8.
